NA AION Going Free-to-Play

NCsoft announces that AION is going free-to-play in North America, a move many have expected since the free-to-play era for the European version of the MMORPG was announced. There are details about this on The AION: Ascension Website, were they say: "In Aion's Truly Free model, players have unrestricted access to all content from level 1-60, no strings attached! Aion Truly Free is a key aspect of Aion: Ascension™, which also contains the Aion 3.0 content update. A plethora of new experiences await, including new zones, increased level cap, mounts, and housing, all of which is also Truly Free!" As for the business model, they say: "If you like the game, we'd appreciate a purchase from our store (game developers need to eat too!). If you don't like the game, can't pay, or don't want to pay—no worries, it's on us!" Here's more:

Here are some of the key features of Aion Truly Free:

  • No subscription fee. Play for free!
  • No account restrictions. Visit any zone, chat in any channel, sell any amount of stuff on the trade broker—nothing is off limits!
  • Robust countermeasures to combat game abuse. We're dedicating a ton of resources to preventing account theft, botting, and real money trading.
  • No hassles. Create your account, download the game, and play!
  • No harassment. Don't worry, we won't hound you with constant offers or promotions.
  • A lot of great stuff we'll reveal more about leading up to launch!

A game that is close to the bottom of the sink as it swirls down the drain.

I can hardly wait for its absolute faceplant down the pipe.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

I'm still waiting till March to get my nostalgia fix (probably will only last minutes but whatever!) when Everquest is free to play.

Ditto, im looking forward to playing EQ myself. EQ is such a massive time sink the fights are epic etc.. I hope they didn't make it to easy, part of the glory of EQ was overcoming some of the insane battles and everyone being pushed to the limits to perform their job. It definitely was a game where CC was critical. Some of the yard trash fights last as long as some of the boss fights in Wow

Free to Play only "really" works when it is made with that in mind. This tact on F2P well feels tacked on.

Good Example: League of Legends. They had a model in mind since the beginning and it just works. I spend some, one of my nephews spends allot, $15 a month and another nephew has spent zero. We all like it and enjoy the game the same way.

Hmm..seems too good to be true. A F2P mmo without soe or turbines bullshit nickle and diming just to have a enjoyable experience? Hope I can use my old character, was a fun game until the bots took over.

Haha.. no restrictions no strings attached? What about essence limit and instance timer? ^^ Thats a pretty hefty gimping of the character and makes it impossible to play the game half-way serious.

Unless, the restrictions are different from the EU F2P version.

Seems pretty legit and wasn't a terrible game in the grand scheme of things. Might have to fire it up again and see how much has changed...
