Bah, Moore's law hasn't been broken, just like we didn't stop exploring when we crested that hill in the distance, or saw what's on the other side of the ocean, or what's above the atmosphere.

It'll be up and down quarks next, then something else, then something after that. Can't stop when you're addicted to the shindig...

I know you said much of this, but the simple point is Moore's Law is dead. Time for something new, and there's no law defining that new.
Ok here's something new. Its called Dev's Law:
Computing performance will increase over time.

I hope I do not live to see that law end.

Blah blah, moore's law can't work anymore blah blah. They've said this for many many years, and they always find something to work around and increase speeds of CPU's. Even if you are down to single atom transistors (which is a long way off, this was just a researcher experiment), you can do things like parallel processing, etc. And yes, I know moore's has to do with # of transistors, but IMHO if the performance still increases I'll call it satisfied.

BTW, some splash screens can be disabled, which sometimes can speed up the app if its pausing in load to show the splash. What annoys me is those unskippable splash screens in a game. Sometimes I look for fixes for those, and the fix is often to delete the file they come from.

Moore's law isn't about speed, it's about transistors. Now that transistors have gotten to one atom large we've hit its limit. It will take many years for this to actually become common, but in labs we've broken Moore's Law.

Does this mean we won't keep getting speed? Of course not - we keep finding ways to add speed. But at that point we're no longer dealing with Moore's Law, which dealt solely in transistors. I don't know, maybe we'll get subatomic transistors, but by and large Moore's Law is dead.

Seriously, buy an SSD and shut up. Office is bloat? The only program that loads slowly for me is Exchange, and that's my fault.

I want to live in a world where the biggest problem I have in a day is hating splash screens.
