On Mass Effect 3 DRM

BioWare's Casey Hudson offers reassurances to gamers by way of Computer and Video Games that the use of Origin does not mean Mass Effect 3 will be burdened by intrusive DRM. They say the game will use a one time online activation, and will allow an unlimited number of installs. Here's more from Hudson:

We use Origin, and it's interesting because really, it's just a way to get access to the online and digital features that, you know, generally, PC games have now. I think people are going to be fine with it.

"I think that the people who try Mass Effect 3 on Origin will realise that it's not an intrusive DRM scheme," he added. "It's just a way for you to sign up for the online services that you're going to get on an ongoing basis through Mass Effect 3.

"Just like you get with any other kind of online digital distribution, or multiplayer or whatever. It's not something that requires you to always be online - you can play Mass Effect 3 offline."

The crap at the end of the demo with the kid felt so forced and pathetic, totally failed to resonate because of how hamfisted it was.

Yeah, that was pretty cheesy. I don't really care when characters die when I've only known them for 10 seconds and their death has nothing to do with the choices I've made.

However, that wasn't the end of the demo. That was just the first half of the demo. The second half is much better. Less cinematics, more gameplay. You have a full squad and multiple weapons and abilities. It provides a much better sample of gameplay than the tutorial level.

Based on the demo, this feels like ME2.5. I'm not seeing any significant changes. At least, nothing like the changes between ME1 and 2.

The demo was really underwhelming but I've never really liked this series very much. One button to do everything gets old fast, it's like they are designing the game for chimps. I had to laugh when there was a tutorial tip to push forward to climb a ladder. The crap at the end of the demo with the kid felt so forced and pathetic, totally failed to resonate because of how hamfisted it was.

After the DA2 fiasco, wait and see for independent gamer reviews on this one. I'm predicting a 95% from PC gamer, and then much lower from anyone who's not bought and paid for.

I love these interviews where Bioware lies about things. Origin is the definition of intrusive DRM.

Forget DRM, Origin doesn't even work in all countries! It lacks proxy support and doesn't work through certain types of content filtering. I had my ME3 refunded because there is no way to download it through Origin!

Casey, it's intrusive as fucking hell when the stupid piece of shit doesn't work.

Origin is fragile as fuck, has terrible trouble connecting to servers and validating content and is nowhere no robust enough to trust AAA titles to.

And the Mass Effect 3 Demo STILL does not work for people like myself. Solely because of Origin.

Next time Casey, don't try and polish a turd and sell it as a pearl, alright? You're just insulting our fucking intelligence.

There was no buying ME1 DLC. PC got it for free because it came out a year after consoles.
Only one DLC was free. They wanted you to buy the other one.
Ahh shit my bad. Forgot there was a second one.

It would be nice if EA's service would compete with Steam. There's still a lot of room for improvement there but I doubt EA feels the need to challenge Valve in terms of features etc, simply because it will be the only way to play EA's games from now on. Encourage other download services of course but I can't see this one benefiting gamers long-term.

Has anyone here not been? Just wondering.

I've been gaming literally since gaming existed.

No. They need to stop being so fucking anal over control of their games. Something Valve sure as shit isnt as Valve games are on Origin.

The only reason I downloaded Origin was to play the Mass Effect 3 demo. I know people have been railing against Origin, but I personally haven't encountered any real issues using it. I'm still primarily a Steam user, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't give another service a try. Will Origin give Steam a run for its money? Right now? No. It's too new a service and it simply doesn't even come close to having a selection that Steam has. Steam's got a major head start, and Origin has some serious catching up to do, but I'm certainly keeping an eye on it.

I don't mind multiple download services. I have been using multiple services for a long time now....it would be just stupid to start complaining about it now.

If I was in charge at EA, Acti-Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc I would want to control the digital distribution of my product. I mean, I still remember the fiasco with buying ME1 DLC from EA after having bought ME1 from Steam. It wasn't just a bitch because it didn't work, it was a bitch because nobody wanted to take responsibility for fixing it. If publishers run their own show, technical issues are the problem of exactly one group...themselves. If this was 1997 and all these various programs running in the background or having to be launched actually affected the performance of my system, perhaps I would care.

I don't want all my games under one umbrella anyway. Doing so only limits oneself and I game on a PC precisely to avoid such limits.

All of that said..Origin kinda sucks atm. Hope EA pulls it together and makes it a bit more functional then just DRM/Storefront.

"Our way or the highway" methods of doing business normally don't work out too well. Unless you're in the business of highway robbery, in which case it's quite profitable.

Origin might be a rebrand in the sense that they changed the name at one point, but they also completely updated the functionality, feature set, and nearly everything else that's visible to the player.

Well, you can play ME3 and Battlefield 3 on it. Can't do that anywhere else...

I mean, unless you don't care for those games, which I guess I understand, but you'll care about something that's an Origin exclusive eventually.
