Notch on Psychonauts 2 "Hype"

The Word of Notch has a follow up on his well publicized overture to Double Fine productions about possibly supplying funding for Psychonauts 2. In spite of recent indications that this was a serious offer, this update is a bit of a reality check, as evidenced by the post's "Hype" title. Notch now says he actually "semi-jokingly" tweeted about funding a sequel to the adventure game, and shows a little naïveté about the attention his public actions attract: "Point is, stop hyping over this, internet! You’re going to scare me into doing things secretly instead of being open and transparent via twitter. I am incredibly scared of the very real risk of people feeling let down just because I took a chance at something that doesn’t end up panning out." He also offers what he sees are the facts in this situation, as he seems them:

  • Tim and I haven’t spoken much at all other than a couple of emails.
  • We mentioned meeting at GDC, I hope that will happen
  • I assume Double Fine will be very busy for many months with the kickstarter project
  • The budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression
  • A couple of other parties have mentioned also being interested in investing in it
  • I would not be investing in this as a charity. It would be because I think the game would be profitable
  • And naturally, I wouldn’t want to have any creative input in the game. It would be purely a high risk investment in a project I believe in.

By saying: "Color me crazy, but this guy seems to be the GameDev equivalent to Kim Kardashian, well, minus the porn."

I mean that the guy has been given far more attention than he can handle, and, unfortunately for him, he rubs off as a bit of a pompus ass.

I doubt highly that he is that way in person, but, whomever said he should talk to an image consultant earlier? Yeah, you're dead to rights on that one.

^D^

PS: I imagine KK's vid got at least 5 million hits, so they really aren't all THAT far off from each other...

He's a guy, a gamer, who made a game that did really well. That's it. He's not a PR crafted celebrity spokesman, he's just a guy who does stuff and says stuff and shouldn't have to change the way he thinks or talks just because he's now got a large fan following. Why? Will society collapse if he doesn't get is act together? Will the impressionable kids start drinking and committing crimes?

With all the celebutards out there basking in the media eye, killing themselves with drugs or alchohol, snorting coke at parties, smoking crack, beating their girlfriends, being vulger, racist, demeaning towards women, perpetuating this terrible, terrible image of what "popular" means...people are going to get bent out of shape because this guy got a little fanboi about Psychonauts and commented about how cool it would be to take his unexpected wealth and helf fund a sequel?

Again, missing my point, and instead latching on to my tongue-in-cheek joke in the post-script...

Sure it is. It's a shitty game and everyone knows shitty, indy games with no marketting budgets sell through peer pressure alone.

"Hey guys, there's this shitty game you should totally buy...or else you're gay!"

Sorry, sport my numbes are a lot higher than that and mine are about quality. You and the rest of the sheeple can keep on loving Notch, RealityTV, etc. all you like. Popular doesn't mean right, much less account for good taste as evidenced by you and your cretinous ilk.

You're so ruggedly anti-establishment. Normally I think of you as a grumpy little troll, but that statement really touched me.

Oh... you mean like the part where it was totally confirmed by gabe and many people working on L4D1 that they'd support it better than TF2 and have tons of free updates including more special infected? I would have been happy if they did even half of the support they give TF2.

While I agree with your sentiment about people hearing what they want to hear, the L4D1/2 thing with valve lying isn't really a good example.

That whole "sight unseen" issue is why I think kickstarter is an iffy prospect.

However, Tim Schafer just got $1.6 million plus on kickstarter, sight unseen, and I've backed over a thousand dollars on kickstarter on projects that are sight unseen, the highest being $350.

You do understand how kickstarter works, right? It's all sight unseen. Which is why only big names are getting big money in gaming on kickstarter. Wasteland 2 is enough for me to kick in $100. Of course, for $100 I'd get a copy of the game and some other random junk. But I'd do it based upon belief in the idea. And because I like backing shit on kickstarter.

Problem here (and always as been) is that gaming is full of fanbois who see something said and take it as gosspil! Look at the the whole L4D/L4D2 thing and such. Too many people hear what they want to hear without things being totally confrimed. (someone says "I'm thinking about doing X" next thing people are doing the "have you heard, they are doing X"

The whole kickstart thing is heading for tears I'd say already - thought it might have had a few years run of good luck before the shit came on. It's starting to smell already.

Also, I call shit every time someone say "I'll give them x dollars" yesterday it was $100 for wasteland 2 by Beamer (sight unseen, no names attached, today -

TAKE MY MONEY!!! ($5)
..........
Take my fucking money. ($15-$20 I'd be comfortable with)

I call total lies on people stating this.

JUST PAY THE FUCKING MONEY AND DON'T POST CLAIMS THAT YOU ARE/WILL.

STOP USING MATH IN SENTENCES!

KK is famous for being famous. Notch is famous because he's an indie dev who made a fantastic game that's about to sell its 5 millionth copy. If you can't understand the difference then you have an extremely shallow view of the world.

Fantastic game? 5 million copies? According to whom? Anyone who likes Notch is squarely in the liking CliffyB, Derek Smart, Cliffski, et al. camp. I, on the other hand, like real developers mysself, Tim Cain, Chris Avellone, Warren Spector, et al.
