Wasteland Sequel Kickstart Coming

An article on IGN has word that, inspired by Double Fine's success, Brian Fargo's inXile Entertainment is planning a Kickstarter campaign to launch a Wasteland sequel for PCs and possibly other platforms, though this may not actually called Wasteland 2. Here's a bit:

He doesn't know if it'd be straight up called Wasteland 2, but he repeatedly emphasized that, despite having thought about it for only 48 hours, it wouldn't be a crazy genre change up. Wasteland, whatever its called, will be "100% faithful to its roots." This means a Wasteland game that "would be focusing on top-down, probably isometric, party based, skill based -- where if you'd just finished playing Wasteland and moved onto this you'd feel comfortable."

I certainly hope the project has smarter people working on it.

Other than that - this could be great.

We'll see how Kickstarter goes. I thought they had a max. amount that a campaign could take in, so I'm not sure Brian Fargo is going to get his million.
Pretty sure no max. There's a minimum though. And there's a fixed duration, so after that time frame is up, the kickstarter is done.

Hmm interplay founder, asking for money up front, no thanks.
Interplay was good for a while until that french company bought them out and put Caen in charge. Fargo even let interplay borrow some of his own money when they started having trouble.

its a double negative, so when you use it, you are being stupid

I'm there. I love the new kickstarter funding ideas. Too bad traditional publishers are too stupid to make great games anymore.

It's true.

In some ways we did it to ourselves though. When 3D got hot after the first 3DFX card came out almost everybody hopped on the bandwagon. Developers who didn't hop on fast enough were panned by reviewers as making "dated" games. Some of the publishers even died off even though they still made pretty fun titles (eg: New World Computing with Might and Magic the RPG).

After that settled it was a technological ride to see who could reach photorealism first - a really costly technological ride.

The more money developers and publishers invested in programming full 3D simulations the less risk they were willing to take. Iterate that over and over and you have the gaming industry today. It's really pretty, it's really expensive to make games, and almost nobody can afford to make a flop or take many risks.

We'll see how Kickstarter goes. I thought they had a max. amount that a campaign could take in, so I'm not sure Brian Fargo is going to get his million.

If there are enough gamers who remember the old days and have money to spend and have time to play and and and.. Well, we'll see. I hope it takes off and we see a renaissance of "old school" games.

It would be awesome if Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Brian Mitsoda, Leonard Boyarsky and Mark Morgan were all involved in this. Extremely unlikely, but awesome nonetheless. They'd have my money in a heartbeat.

Holy shit that'd be the proverbial awesome possum!

A real Wasteland sequel now just trying to pass off Fallout as it? I think I just creamed my pants. Now throw in a Neuromancer remake along the same lines and I'd need a box of depends.

I need to know who else is involved in development before parting with my money. Fargo was great but his involvement alone isn't enough to make a great RPG.

Irregardless of all the 'cashing in on the kick starter hype', this could be the week the world of PC gaming takes a huge turn...

On the one hand, I won't support big companies like DF/etc, because I think it's wasted dollars that would be better off helping 'start ups', but on the other, a few great successes can make this a feasible alternative, and hopefully come up with some neat new genres, or additions to. And who better to pay for classics updating than a bunch of cranky BluesNewsian curmudgeons : )

I am highly doubtful this will turn out to be a grand success; big (and little) devs will continue to go over budget, and in this case, no one will be around to extend times available or bail them out. I know a lot of people feel that's no different than the publisher backed model, but I do : )

That guy did a pretty cool "Let's Play" of Wasteland. His extra narration adds to the game and makes the video enjoyable.

That guy sounds like the boss in x-files. He has a good voice.
