Pre-certified Catalyst Reference Drivers

AMD/ATI Support now offers a new version 12.2 pre-certified Catalyst reference drivers for AMD/ATI GPUs. These offer a number of changes and enhancements, along with the following explanation of what pre-certification represents: "The AMD Catalyst™ 12.2 Certified driver (It is the same driver as the Catalyst 12.2 Pre-Certified, but will be officially Microsoft® certified) will be posted in late February or very early March 2012."

If a normal VGA cable is higher quality, there's probably something wrong in the settings for the HDMI input on the HDTV or the HDMI output on the video card. Normally, at BEST a VGA should be same quality.

Somethings to look for are a setting that says "pixel" scaling (you want that on usually) otherwise the screen often scales and not in a good way to try and fill the screen to the edge. Also on the video card, make sure its not outputting 1080i (interlaced) on hdmi output. That's a common default setting.

I'm sure there's other things too, but those are first 2 I can think of off hand that really screw up how the picture looks on hdtv through HDMI that might not show up on VGA.

Often new HDTV's are factory set defaulting on with filters on that screw up stuff, like sharpen/smoothing filters or de-graining filters (which I've found make movies look plasticy and fake to remove the director intended grain). Settings like this are named all sorts of things, and often sound fairly innocuous.

On the other hand, if you don't mind the length limitations of VGA, don't mind having a separate often analog audio cable, and you can't be bothered to figure out the problem, enjoy it as you already have it
