I think you nailed it with the last sentence. If you want a publisher to fund your game, you will have to dumb it down and design it for consoles. That's why these Kickstarter funds are so appealing. You don't need publishers. You can make whatever you want to make. Should developers need to resort to direct consumer funding to make the games they want to make? Ideally, no. But the industry is anything but ideal.
