Op Ed

Cliffski's Blog - The kickstarter reality.
But this is not *the* new publishing model, far from it. RPS noted that the developers ‘don’t have a publisher breathing down their necks’. Really? Maybe they have 10,000 publishers now, impatient, possibly wanting contradictory stuff (almost definitely…in fact), and not restrained by the politeness of scheduled milestone meetings behind closed doors. I hope it goes well, but it could get messy.

Plus the developer is boxed into a corner, they know exactly what they have to do with that money. This is not always a good thing. I ship maybe half the games I start. Gratuitous Tank Battles was not the game I intended to make. I intended to make a life-sim game, then abandoned it to make an RTS, then it morphed into GTB.

So while the absolute amount and the quickness in getting to it is in large part because of double fine's reputation, its possible to be unknown and still succeed on a kickstarter.

Oh, I'm sure there are other projects that get funded.

I'm just saying, with developing a game... a person that has zero games under their belts, would have a tough time raising money. They'd have to have a late alpha or early beta done, to convince most people.

But sight unseen... not even a concept outline... just "We want to make an oldschool adventure game"... The only way anyone would get funding that way, is people that are famous for doing it in the first place.

Yes, though there's also a chance that if you present a good game plan and what you plan to do with it if you're an unknown you'll get enough funds to move on. In a way kickstarter is a mirror of high finance investments, you often invest sight unseen on ideas that look great on paper but you have no idea if it'll pull off. In the end Kickstarter is about risk-taking, about investing to people who are unknown or who have reputation and bet on their idea or project to come true.

It won't replace regular business models but Kickstarter does show there are viable model alternatives and it may open the door to more different models.
