Well with the football season over, the sports fan in me once again turns his attention towards the coming of baseball Sheesh, Blue. Way to skip right over college basketball. UConn is just the next state over... |

I don't know why they don't do the preload thing for big updates to massively popular games.
Shame they don't download it like DLC too, which means you can play while you download, though I guess this way it (presumably) deletes the old texture files.
And the game is $40 on steam! I'll have to grab it tonight!
UGH! SO TEMPTING! I am going to hold off more....wait for the 30 GoTY edition....have so much even from the Holiday sale stuff I haven't touched, and a few games I am gloming onto yet.... |

I saw it and honestly, it was bad. It is a prequel, not a remake and not a good one either. One of the things they didn't understand when making this movie was that the Thing wasn't shown on screen much originally not because it was hard for the effects, but that it helped add to the feel of the movie. In this prequel the Thing is on screen almost a third of the movie, and obviously CGI which just kills it. Less is more in this kind of movie, less really is more. |

In global news, the science crew there has gone chaotic and started killing each other. Rumors of a shape-shifting... thing... are floating around. It is supposedly vulnerable to fire. Your second line was the first thing I thought of after reading the first line. That and the XFiles episode which they admit was a take off of The Thing.

Similar, except that it made made me think of HP Lovecraft rather than the X Files. More specifically, Charles Stross's recent books centered around the Counter-Occult Branch of the UK Government. Bureaucracy, paperclips, and mind-bending horror.
It's called The Laundry. Well worth it if you're looking for a fun read. |

| Just change servers... especially with a big "western" release like Skyrim, switching to something like South Korea will give you a 1+MB/s |

I saw that Kingdoms of Amalur just came out today - quite tempted. And Skyrim looks better than ever. But I still have Oblivion, Fallout 3, FO: New Vegas, Torchlight, and DX:HR to play, and haven't even started any of them.

But nope, download speed isn't in the region of 2MB/S but <70KB/S and no playing until it's done. Yeah, I may buy it as soon as I get home, but I'm not kicking it off until bed time, and hope by tomorrow morning, I can kick off the texture pack. I average around 2-3 meg a second from steam, but I figure everyone and their dog will be downloading tonight.

Oh man am I regretting hitting the button. I figured I'd have it in maybe 45mins, time it nicely. I figured that even if slow, since it was presented in the Steam store as DLC I should be able to play the game before finishing.
But nope, download speed isn't in the region of 2MB/S but <70KB/S and no playing until it's done.
Before someone starts screaming about "gamer entitlement", Steam is a high-premium service and I spend a lot of hard-earned money there. Currency is a mechanism for trading entitlements.
For all the faults with Steam, I generally like it rather a lot. The one big bug-bear is how damn slow it is to download even when the content servers are supposedly only at half-capacity.
OK, adding more bandwidth costs money. But they don't manage it at all sensibly - the setup is the worst possible way. Big releases, not just of games, should pre-load. Files should download separately and install afterwards, allowing you to play games before it's done - though admittedly the forced updates are a good idea for MP games. If you launch one SP game while downloading for another, it should continue to download. Sensibly managing a problem for no cost. |
