Acleacius wrote on Feb 3, 2012, 23:52: Another example on The Stygian Abyss he was the one of four manual editors. Uh.. no. At least not from the interviews I've read in the past.
His team was a group within Origin that broke off into Blue Sky Productions (but still was published by or part of Origin), which became Looking Glass Studios when Ultima Underworld II came out. He was the head of the studio AFAIK, and one of the major designers.
They were experimenting with their 1st person engine (before Doom), and decided to make an RPG. Garriot didn't want anything to do with it, but let them use the Ultima name. I'd post links that are relevant, but I don't even know where to begin searching for those old interviews.
Am I claiming he created Ultima Underworld all by himself? Of course not! But he had a heck of a lot more to do with it than being just a "manual editor". |

He must intentionally let people think (or lead them to believe?) he had a lot to do with System Shock. He was an outside producer, which is pretty far removed from game design. Iirc, even if you want to check inside the game, he's near "Salt the Fries".
Thief The Dark Project, Wtf? special thanks, no involvement with design listed. NONE, nadda, not even, doesn't include, not there.
Here's hoping one day the proper developers get credit for the games warren is wrongfully credited for by players.
Hey, wouldn't it be funny if Game Developers' Award gives him credit for games he DIDN'T design. |

Edit: And yeah, that doesn't even include his PnP stuff. So yeah, bow down and kiss his arse! Your including games he gets special thanks for, the same thing family, wives, girlfriends, dogs and cats get? Dark Messiah is one such example and on System Shock he was Outside Producer only (check the credits before flaming).
Edit: I'm guessing this came from his own page or something becasue it seems to be a lot of fluff. Another example on The Stygian Abyss he was the one of four manual editors.

I'm also hard pressed to think of a more deserving person for this award. Kudos to Mr. Spector and thanks for all the great games (System Shock being the top of my personal list). |

System Shock ranks as one of the greatest games I have ever played. And Wing Commander was epic for its time. Also, I had a lot of fun with Crusader, a sort of sci-fi Diablo.
I own Thief and Deus Ex, but just haven't found the time to play them. Maybe after I finish Skyrim... |

venomhed wrote on Feb 3, 2012, 15:10: 12 years ago though. Just like Richard Garriot when you have that long of a gap can it be called a Lifetime Achievement Award? Seems misplaced to me. Sure, he should receive accolades for his past games, but it was a team that helped design the game from the ground up.
It's like giving the coach of the Chicago Bulls a lifetime achievement award when he had Michael Jordan on his team. Once MJ left, how well did the coach do? Not very well. You're ignoring WS's other contributions, including a lot of Looking Glass Studios efforts, like System Shock and Ultima Underworld.
The dude was even prolific in the 80's with tabletop RPGs. He wrote Yellow Clearance Black Box Blues for Paranoia, which is one of the most highly regarded published adventures of any RPG. |
