Tribes Ascend Changes

Hi-Rez Studios announces significant changes for Tribes Ascend, based on feedback from closed beta testing of this upcoming continuation of the Tribes series of multiplayer first-person shooters. Word is they are shaking up their planned class structure, and will be adding more of the flexibility players have been requesting. Here's word on the next update to the game's ongoing closed beta test, which is available to those who preorder through the Tribes Ascend Website, along with some of those who have signed up for the beta:

The next update will include additional class customization and a much more polished user interface that really showcases the sci-fi, high resolution graphics of Tribes: Ascend. Hi-Rez will be collapsing the total number of playable classes from 12 to 9, but adding the ability for players to unlock new weapons for each class and further customize their loadout. Three of the nine classes will be available right away so a new player will have access to a Light, Medium, and Heavy class in his or her first match.

“We believe this system preserves class-based combat while also offering additional flexibility for players to customize classes around individual play style. It continues to provide a balanced and level playing field for all players.”

Yep, F2P/P2W, just like that horrible game Team Fortress 2.

TF2 was balanced and released long before it went F2P. Regardless, I don't play TF2 either, 25 or so hours total since release. But Valve doesn't steal your money by forcing you to buy their own form of currency. TF2 doesn't sell you the equivalent of a monthly subscription to make you more powerful and you lose it when you stop paying. TF2 items drop (randomly awarded), so really you never have to buy a damn thing and you will still get new gear.

$8 (10 days) & $15 (30 days) Boosters double the base XP and Tokens you receive inside of the game as you play, allowing you to unlock classes, skills and perks at a faster rate.

So what happens to all the players that have unlocked classes and unlocked perks and abilities to classes that are going away or to classes that are being changed? I hope we don't get shafted.

Posts on the beta boards seem to indicate that, if you've unlocked stuff that's being removed, you'll get the equivalent amount of XP back to re-spend on whatever.

It doesn't even cost 8, you can play for free and do well. The 2 free classes previous to this patch are actually some of the best ones (ranger and solider). It's definitely not pay to win (so far). Playing/paying more just gives you more options, not better options.

With this patch you get 3 free classes: Pathfinder (good/great), Soldier (great), and Juggernaut (okay).

Oh god, I took a closer look, this is a F2P/P2W game? Barf. I've avoided them like the plague. Pre-order is $30 so I dont see how someone got it for $8. I still may give it another look when Im not at work, but Ive got enough non-P2W crap to play.

[AND they've been accepting money for gold and boosters which people have been using to gain this progress.

Are these the same people that bought into Hellgate Londons Lifetime Subscription?

Seriously though, I'm interested to try out the game, but more interested in Firefall. If $8 is all it takes, I may look into that. Still, the devs promising to carry over stuff to official launch of the game is dumb. Launch day should be a relatively even playing field.

I wonder how flexible loadout customization will actually be.

On a side note, there was nothing balanced or level about the class system. A team with all the unlocks had a significant advantage over a team with none. Hell, a team with no unlocks wouldn't even have any heavies or snipers.

You two are hilarious. "What about my unlocks *cry*". It's beta. Be prepared to lose everything at any moment. If you are worried about losing stuff, then don't play beta'.

They're refunding the XP and Gold to players to re-spend in the new setup. I doubt anyone is actually "losing" anything.

Yeah, I understand that. I only spent the lowest amount, 8 bucks I think it was, just to get permanent VIP status, which I'm confident will remain in some form throughout the game's lifetime.

AS someone who's bought the Tribes: Ascend preorder pack, I still consider spending money on a beta game with promise of carryover as a risk. I spent money on Company of Heroes Online and that never made it out of beta and there were no refunds. Not mad, just saying, it's a risk you take.

Not sure if you're serious or not... But a big thing they've been saying is that ALL PROGRESS made in beta will carry over into release. AND they've been accepting money for gold and boosters which people have been using to gain this progress. So yeah, if they accept money for something and make a promise that it won't be wiped, people might get upset about that. Not so hilarious.

Anyway, full patch notes here: http://hi-rez.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/297

Awesome! I've been playing the hell out of the beta and having a great time. Not too worried about getting screwed on unlocks, I'm sure they have a system in place. Either a refund of tokens or an exchange system. Either way, I'm excited about the new patch with custom loadouts. I know what I'll be playing tonight. Again.

EDIT: From the patch notes...

CONVERSION NOTE: Due to the depth and breadth of changes in this update, users will start fresh in the game with no items purchased. Gold and XP will be refunded based on previously earned XP, Tokens and Gold in the game (such that your time in the game thus far is rewarded). This will allow each user to choose how to allocate their earnings optimally under the new system without being constrained by your previously made choices.

I do have to say that it is a positive change.
