EverQuest Going Free-to-Play

The EverQuest Players Website announces EverQuest is going free-to-play in early March after years of operation as a subscription MMORPG (thanks Acleacius). Get your sticks ready, as they plan on offering more payment options than you can shake a stick at:

We're excited to be expanding the EverQuest experience by making the game more accessible to every type of player so that you can choose to play the game in a way that suits you best. Anyone who wishes to start, return or continue to play one of the "Best Games of All-Time" can simply download and play EverQuest on their terms – think of it as Free to Play, Your Way. Recurring subscriptions, non-recurring subscriptions, Silver or Free memberships, item unlockers, and more. The game will now be setup to be flexible so that *you* can decide how much to pay, based on how much fun you're having.

Damn, hope I can log in my monk under the F2P system.

I think EQ peaked with the Velious expansion. I might be a little partial though since my guild was the first to clear Sleeper's tomb on our server. Ahh, I miss the drama.

I can see me liking the visit back to EQ up until the point that I leave a zone and see that "Loading, please wait..." screen. WoW's seamless world has spoiled me.

those zone lines saved my ass many a time. : P

Yeah... they have to make a micro-transaction store, figure out what assets to sell vs. free droppable loot, or make totally new assets (for the store) and integrate them into the game.

It doesn't sound like much from that sentence, but in reality it is a ton of work. Then add in bogus limitations like locked out races and classes.

They have stated before that they only want to spend time and resources on original IP which they own.

That statement coupled with Vanguard withering at their hands. I don't think they will support it. Im guessing they got it for pennies, milked the money out of it as best they could and kept it from competing with their games without them getting a cut.

Whole Vanguard situation still pisses me off. It looked to be a really good game, but it crashed constantly for me, was like magic with the memory leaks..every 30 something odd minutes I'd crash at a higher resolution, turn it down and it'd extend to about an hour....but I'd crash like clockwork. And it was in a game where dieing meant you got majorly screwed, not a good combination.

Pretty far. I think they don't even have a dev team anymore. It's on life support, and has been so for a couple years now. Unless they suddenly put some resources in to convert it... it will either stay subscription based, or they will kill it all together, like Matrix Online.

EQ always had a dev team, which is why they were still realeasing expansions... all the way through November of 2011. So, there was resources available to be able to convert it.
At first I couldn't figure out why they would need a dev team, since new content wouldn't really be necessary. The conversion issue makes sense of it.

Last I heard there were still at least 2 dev team members who work on fixing technical issues, but this easily could have changed. Also when I've logged in most people say since the single server merger grouping is pretty easy. Once again this could have changed.

I guess if it's too much cost to convert, it wouldn't work. Once they get their systems in place, might be more efficient.

Haha, trains in Karnors Castle were the worst. And with my enchanter I controlled each and everyone, so that I actually hoped for one and told my group everytime to pull one. It was epic. Too bad they changed this game too much.

Rookies. I was training in Castle Mistmoore while you were in diapers.

Oh yeah. Mistmoore and Crushbone are the worst. TRAIN! TRAIN TO ZONE!!!

If they still have the same pathing and aggro system.....the trains in a seamless world would be.........monumental.

I just remember what Mistmoore and Unrest were like with the trains...insanity.

They are grandfathering in existing toons (ie. toons created prior to F2P) in EQ2 at least, so I'll finally be able to start them back up without paying an exorbitant amount to do so...

Also, they will refund ppl who payed for packs for pre-F2P toons.
Nice find, thanks for the infos.

Tried playing my old druid on a free month a couple years back and I was just lost. I'd have to start a new guy to even begin to learn about the game without getting my guy killed a dozen times in the process of learning and potentially losing all my stuff.

I'd be willing to try it, but I doubt I'd give it much time to grow on me. SOE is not on my "Oh they'll take care of" list....it's sad they are one of the few successful MMO developers and have had one of the bigger selections but just end up nosing them all into the ground.

Thanks for the linkage.

Not directed at you, just soe....
Define hard, I mentioned from looking on the faq, which was linked on this article. How hard should it be for a potential customer?

One particular thing stands out and there's nothing in soe Everquest faq. Turbine offers 3 month discount for subscribing instead of the $15, you get it for $10 per month. Guess soe doesn't want their servers to fill up with people spending money for 3 months at a time.

Of course it could just be soe's Corporate baseless sense of entitlement, too.

The joys of getting rich in POK casting buffs with my enchanter. Im looking forward to playing again honestly. I went back a few years ago and played but i just didn't have enough time to commit to get 15 dollars worth of game time out of it. I just hope I can use my old toons.
Sadly, it doesn't seem to allow it:
The four free races included with FREE and Silver Memberships are: Human, Erudite, Barbarian and Gnome.

The four free classes included with FREE and Silver Memberships are: Warrior, Cleric, Wizard, and Rogue

This the same crap they are pulling on EQ2, just sucks.
