As I commented on another site, that move by the feds is damn scary. No one has been convicted of anything yet, there's been no due process, but they believe they have the right to start eliminating user data?

In this case it's the third party server hosts that Megaupload used who will delete data due to their bills going unpaid. The feds froze their assets (well the known ones anyway) so Cogent/etc will only contractually hold onto the data for so long.

I agree that it's a scary situation however, this guy is being treated like a drug kingpin or something.

For me, our luck, or rather, the consumer's with a working mind luck is that the Pirate Party is experiencing massive growth in the EU. It's close to being the 4th major party in Germany as an example and is threatening the third major party. The other parties have started to feel so threatened by the Pirate Party that many are now adopting their politic views, like respecting privacy and making copyright laws more sane. Hell, the Green party, one of the major parties in EU, has pretty much adopted a pirate party carbon copy policy about copyright.

Who would have said that today the people defending sane laws would end up being the pirate party? What interesting times we live in when the PP defends Innocent Until Proved Guilty over all other parties.
