Maxis' AAA Game Plans

Gamasutra has a job listing from Maxis, indicating the EA-owned studio has a new AAA project in the works. Word is: "Maxis is seeking an experienced Graphics Engineer to join our team in Emeryville, CA. In this role, you will be working with a highly talented and experienced team on an upcoming triple-A simulation style game." There are no further hints about the nature of the game, but the listing also includes a platform list: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Online Multiplayer, Mac OS X, Windows. Thanks supererogatory.

My favorite Spore is still the GDC 2005 Spore.

SimTower and SimCopter remakes would be great.

I still firmly believe that the real spore was never released, they just dumbed down each module to make it short and shallow and called it a day. In a sense, they made a good arcade game, but a terrible SIM.

The concept of Spore must have been truly revolutionary but if your main selling point depends on technology that doesn't exist (dynamic-mesh, bones structure, joints placeable, adaptive and fully dynamic IK chains and limits and WYSIWYG editor) you simply face the sheer reality of "we gotta do basic tech work here" - heck, after they were done with the technology they probably had nearly no time to work on the game.

And the texturing in the editor is truly revolutionary as well, mixing various shaders, have them applied procedurally on the mesh, that is not something you can just download somewhere and put in. That had to be developed from scratch.

How sad it is... technologically Spore is a true marvel, wasted by EA and the weird situation where you have such a technology now ready, but no intention to make a real/fantasy/sci-fi "life-sim" with it.

Bummer

Must have had a 8 x 8 land grid to make it manageable.

It also came out for the ZXSpectrum and the Commodore 64 and they were pretty decent compared to the Amiga version, which was the definitive one and still is.

Still, the original Spore was ambitious and creative

The original Spore design was ambitious and creative. The Spore game turned out to be neither.

I don't blame you guys for not keeping up with this, but Maxis was finally freed from all The Sims development back in 2009 when EA created The Sims Studio and gave them the series.

That's why Maxis was able to develop Spore and Dark Spore. . . not that those turned out well. Still, the original Spore was ambitious and creative, if not really any fun to play. I hope they at least set out to do something unique again.

It is for SimMaxis...where you are able to control the dev's at Maxis as they repeatedly remake the same game over and over and over and over again...while sending off their other IP's to other studios to create horrible spinoffs.
...
Profit!

Never heard of SimTower, is that true? Please tell more.

Sim Ant was cool, it was the ants sugar.
Simtowerwas true, a lot of fun too. The days of really fun sim games seems to have died though. Sim earth, or sim ant. Hell even sim farm would be nice to see again.

If you have an Android phone, check out Kairosoft's Story series. Mega Mall Story is heavily inspired by Simtower. Grand Prix Story is the best of the series IMHO.

How about a SimCity game without all the stupid Sims tie-ins? I'd even take a direct port of Sim City 2000, maybe using Frostbite 2 for some awesome destruction action?

I miss when Maxis was cool enough that this would have been an exciting announcement, the days of games like SimTower, SimAnt, SimEarth... Ever since EA and The Sims, they've lost their soul. Spore could have been a classic, and ended up being such a disappointment because they decided cutesy and casual should be the focus. A new Simcity might be okay if they go back to what made it a great series, I guess.
