Seamless Entertainment announces the release of SOL: Exodus, saying the space shooter is now available via Steam. Here's word on the game: By the year 2500, Earth had become toxic and unsafe for human life. Pollution and overpopulation had ravaged the planet, forcing humanity to the stars. Colonies and settlements soon sprung up across the solar system, but man had not left its thirst for war behind. Then, they learned their sun was dying, and everything changed. Only when faced with threat greater than each other did the nations of man finally come together. The United Colonies of SOL (UCS) was born, its first and only mission: to locate a new home for mankind, safely beyond the doomed borders of our solar system.
Suit up and take on the role of the Lieutenant Commander, ace fighter pilot and 2nd in command of the UCS Atlas, as you search for a new home, battle a mysterious enemy, and rescue humanity from a fiery end.
Key features:
- Experience an action space shooter like no other with Unreal™-powered visuals.
- Eight epic missions take you across breathtaking landmarks of our solar system, including Pluto, Neptune, Triton, Uranus, Saturn, and Titan.
- Utilize the advanced weaponry of your UCS HADES space fighter, including dual gatling guns, tracking missiles and MAG cannon.
- Engage a variety of enemy fighters, bombers, drones and more as you protect civilian transports and defend installations from attack.
- Take down massive capital ships by hacking into them and revealing their weak points or turning their weapons on one another.
- Learn the origins of your shadowy foes as the plot unfolds through full voice-acted dialogue
- Replay missions to earn higher ranks and perform heroic actions to earn upgrade points which can be used to improve your fighter.
- Top your friends on Steam leaderboards and compare your medals with dozens of achievements to unlock!
- Fully remappable controls support USB gamepads, joysticks, and mouse/keyboard control schemes.

Fully remappable controls support USB gamepads, joysticks, and mouse/keyboard control schemes. This is BS it doesn't work with most joysticks. On my X52 the throttle doesn't work and it constantly spins. Others report Thrustmaster sticks don't work. The dev claims this will be fixed in about a week. |

What we want is a Freespace 3, a Wing Commander something, and a new X-Wing Alliance game! Hey if you're gonna dream, dream big! We'll take all of the mentioned titles, AND they'll be PC exclusives with proper joystick and keyboard support. |

Freespace 2 SCP is still where it's at, get a copy of FS2 @ gog.com, hit http://scp.indiegames.us/ and get all the updates you can get way more entertainment value then this mindless indie attempt at a space sim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhAR8rWPluQ As aswesome as Freespace 2 is, it still belongs into the same simplistic arcade action category with this game, or X-Wing for that matter. All these games have the same toyish Star Wars flight model. Obviously mission parameters are much more complex in Freespace 2 and the battles far bigger, but it's still "aeroplane in space" nonetheless.
If you want realistic space combat with newtonian flight model, I suggest to check out I-War and IW2: Edge of Chaos. Of course Elite II belongs into this same category as well. Well yeah, that's kind of the point. It's a dogfighting game, not a true simulator (even if the genre is called space sim). It would be like bitching about the fact that in Quake you can instantly heal yourself with a medkit - it's supposed to be inaccurate for the sake of gameplay. |

Has anyone tried either or both? I downloaded the demo for Evochron Mercenary, but I haven't tried it yet. I've been playing that one for a while and it's a totally different style game. Evochron is like a scaled up, harder Freelancer with less focus on story and more on simulation. It takes a while to master and you will get your ass kicked. For how awesome it is you'd never suspect it was developed by ONE GUY with more content on the way. |

Star Trek: Online, check it out. Granted its an MMO with standard MMO type missions but the space portions are rather fun and good.
Ground combat is a horrible mess and looks like ass.
So far Im playing it like a story single player at about a mission a day, so it doesnt feel like too much of a grind. It works since these story arc missions basically take about half an hour to 45 minutes to complete and usually give you a level up at completion. |
