Quoteworthy - Paradox on DRM

"No one should have to purchase a product that theyíre unable to install because of the DRM. There might be other reasons, like the compatibility isnít correct, or whatever. But people who purchase a game should have just as easy a time as those who pirate the game, otherwise itís a negative incentive to buy a legal copy. And I just canít see why people are using DRM still. If you take something like Sonyís DRM, SecuROM -- itís a waste of money," says Paradox CEO Fred Wester. "It will keep you protected for three days, it will create a lot of technical support, and it will not increase sales. And I know this for a fact, because we tried it eight years ago, and it never worked for us. Two major reasons: it costs money and it makes you lose money, and the other is that itís so inconvenient to customers."

Region blocking is an unfortunate necessity. Steam actually does a poor job of it, as there are plenty of key resellers out there that sell brand new games for 50% off.

And what's wrong with that? I should be able to buy from anywhere in the world and not pay an artificial premium.

In one sense, allowing you to do this would be screwing the regions that can't afford to pay $60 US for a video game. When you live in a country that the average person makes $3000 a year (if that) paying $60 for a video game isn't possible. So what does the publisher do (if they even bother to localize the game for that region)? They lower the price of the game for that region or sell copies on the cheap to a regional distributor.

If you were allowed, however, to buy games from that region then that would force the price of the game down to that region's price and since the publisher either doesn't want to sell that low to all regions or can't afford to, it is forced to raise the price to $60 everywhere essentially screwing everyone in poorer regions.

Region blocking is a necessity. Although, there are down sides to it. Australia is screwed over by all publishers.
