A fantastic place to start would be with the "Lazy Newb Pack". All you need in terms of third-party helpfull programs like Dwarf Therapist and Great GFX sets.
With the GFX packs, the game will look like a Game boy Advance game pretty much. All without taking away any of the complexity and depth.
Here, try it out:

And here is a great tutorial on how to get started with the pack:

Just implement a UI that isn't crap and graphics that aren't headache inducing. THIS. a more user friendly interface doesn't dumb down anything, and frankly the UI for DF is just downright terrible. Complicated and obtuse layers of menus DOES NOT make for deep game mechanics. I could maybe forgive it for the ASCII graphics, but how the game controls is not worth it at all, and it doesn't look like the developer will improve on this point any time soon. Agreed. Personally, I wouldn't mind a game having a long hand-holding period so long as it leads to something that makes that introductory period worth it. Would be cool to just design a game that slowly introduces the player to more and more features until it dawns on them that they've gotten themselves into something insanely deep... |

I just finished reading ADWD and I'm so pissed off with how it ended. Not the way it ended, but the fact that we'll be waiting years to find out what it all means/meant. George suffers the curse of all good wrtiers, he's damned lazy. I just wish the guy would buckle down and pound out the rest of it ASAP.

It looks like it'll be a textbook example of how mainstream devs can't even begin to cope with a complex game like DF. It might be worth a play if you like management games, but that's as far as it goes.
DF will be legendary through all time. Yeah, shame about the interface I guess, but if you can get past it, man. |

Dwarf Fortress isn't going anywhere. Let people like me live in hope that something similar but more accessible is possible.
And the mechanics are nothing that a context sensitive drop down menu couldn't handle. And the emergent fun would still be strong without all the minutia of the simulation... though keeping that intact would be preferable.
The digging RPG genre has a long and storied history of wasted potential and there is a space on my shelf/steam favorites list for a good one. Bring it! |

| I'd love to see a more user-friendly Dwarf Fortress, especially one with at least a decent 2D sprite engine. I love the concept of Dwarf Fortress but the ASCII art-style gives me headaches, no really it actually does give me headaches. However a friend who's into the game told me that SO much is simulated that when you build a big enough fortress with tons of dwarves it will bring modern computers to their knees without adding a fancy graphics engine. My only question is what resources Dwarf Fortress uses for the simulation, if a game could off-load some of that on to the GPU it might allow for a better graphics engine. |

| Toady One (developer of Dwarf Fortress) has mentioned that he's been approached a few times with proposals for making a more commercial Dwarf Fortress. I wonder if this game is from one of the companies that approached him. |
