Out of the Blue

With the battle still raging over whether the U.S. will pass its proposed SOPA or PIPA legislation (the former of which seems to have been mortally wounded, but the latter of which is still in play), there is a movement afoot to protest this with a web blackout tomorrow, supported by sites like imgur, reddit, Wikipedia, and more. I can't say I know what such a blackout will accomplish, but I do know the draconian aspects of these bills are unsettling to say the least, so unless something changes drastically in the meantime, my plan is for this site to participate in the blackout. Apologies in advance for the outage should this come to pass.

It's only 45 minutes until Blue's blackout is over but here I am nonetheless. I really don't check the site much 8am-7pm because I'm working or sleeping then.

Work was very strange indeed without (direct) access to Wikipedia though. When I really wanted to know something my workaround of choice was inserting .m. to use the mobile site instead.

Ah, see, I was speaking in terms of non-entertainment value. I do use wikis and Wikipedia for quick info on games that I may be interested, or some random "thing", just not as a serious research tool. I'm probably not explaining it very well: lack of sleep as the baby spontaneously decided to change her sleep patterns two days ago.

Ah.
Yeah, it's only good as a launching-off point for serious research, and even then so easily tainted with confirmation loops (e.g. someone puts incorrect information on it, someone lazily writes and article using that information but not citing it, someone finds that article and cites it in the incorrect Wikipedia article, now that incorrect information is cited and taken as fact, etc.), but it's great for casual research.

I'm on it perpetually. Any browser I use gets it as a plug-in so I can just highlight terms, right click and search it. And virtually all of my tablet use comes from watching something on TV, wanting more information and looking up the movie, the actors, or the topic on Wikipedia.

Yeah, it looks like there wasn't a lot of thought put into it beforehand...

I kinda like the consumerist approach to today: they're still posting, but only SOPA stories.
