Valve has never been fans of announcing games four years before launch. HL2 was announced in May with a release date of September (which it famously missed by a mile, earning Valve a ton of flack and making them guard in-progress games even more tightly.) Portal 2 was announced in March 2010 with a release date of "2010" (which it also missed.) Episode 1 was announced in February 2006 and released in June. TF2, in its current form, was announced summer 2006 and released October 2007. L4D2 was announced in May and released in November.
Yes but in this thread you said SINCE tf2 and hl2. As I mentioned, l4d2 was because it was so close after l4d1 release (and likely they hadn't decided to sell it separately until shortly before announcing, since they had previously promised that kinda content as DLC updates for l4d1). |

We don't know what the actual Half-Life team is working on but presumably it's Half-Life 3 given the silence and refusal to comment from Valve. I also doubt there will be an actual third episode anymore, I think they'll just roll it into Half-Life 3 somehow. I'm more interested in seeing what they're doing with the latest iteration of the Source engine more than anything else. Yup. From a post I made a month ago:

Like, several of them. They don't say anything because it's a lose-lose situation. If they say something, then they get delayed, or they discuss a feature that gets cut (Mr. Friendly?), they get a huge fan backlash. Suddenly everything they do is under a microscope. And even if they just say "we're working on it" then they get a billion questions about it (right now the question is just a standard "where is it" which is by now done more out of obligation.) And if they say anything at all now people will bitch about them "hyping" their game, a pathetically vague term.
Valve doesn't announce games until they're close to shipping. Ever since the TF2 debacle and the HL2 fiasco they've done it this way. They typically ship 4-6 months after announcement. Want HL3 announced? Wait until 6 months before it's in your hands. Nope, left 4 dead series is one of those that seems mostly to have been left alone now. I mentioned what they are working on in a post yesterday. dota and TF2 stuff. Just because its my OPINION they aren't working on hl3/ep3 doesn't mean I'm ignoring facts.
I agree though that game companies get screwed either way if they say something too far out or don't say anything.
4-6 months though is NOT accurate for valve's recent activities. They announced dota 2 over a year ago. L4D1 was announced about 2 years in advance. L4D2 was indeed about that time, but likely because it was only decided to make a separate game around that time, and announcing it sooner would have put it right after l4d1 release and killed its sales. |

I thought Episode 2 was great, but disliked Episode 1. Episode 1 found me getting incredibly sick of the zombies moaning, then followed it up with babysitting NPCs. I didn't like it. If I recall ammo was an issue, too, making the zombies more time consuming.
But Episode 2 I remember loving. |

Seriously though, I'd rather have no info than constant hype like was done for nearly two years straight with SW:TOR. Just surprise me 3-4 months before the game is released don't tease me with shit for years. |

And wth is it going to hurt them to acknowledge that, no, they haven't abandoned or forgotten HL or that yes, we are working on it and it will be out when it's done. Millions? Extremely unlikely. a) because only 2 groups out of bazillions even barely break 1 million members. One is the steam holiday one where people got rewards for doing so, and since it was free and no specific games required, it was one that got hit hugely by exploiters buying the 1 cent humble bundle pack. b) There's was about 30 million active steam accounts before the sale as I recall, I think its unlikely that that big of a percentage of them will sign up on a group like that. In fact there's not even a half life related group in the top 50, and after the top 50 its under 80,000 in a group. If there was that much interest in it, I'd think that a half life related group would already be at least in the top 50.
If it was just an online petition, I could see it hitting over a million, but a steam group? IMHO, not going to happen. |
