Diablo III in February?

Joystiq has an image of a store display in a Rochester, Minnesota Best Buy that seems to show a February 1 launch date for Diablo III, Blizzard's upcoming action/RPG sequel. They have some follow ups that don't completely confirm or deny this, and word that the end-cap was legit, but has since been removed. Meanwhile, the Best Buy Website now shows a February 1 release date for the game.

geez...so much butt hurt in here. I will end up getting it, but probably not until a sale or let them flesh out some issues. Apparently only 10 of us didn't get in the BETA. As it seems like everyone else in the world did.....

I got the impression the always online DRM goes beyond simple verification to function something more like a single-player MMO instance. I guess I don't know how hard it will be for people to create private server software that works and can run in the background without screwing game performance.

Do you know of any examples of similar schemes that were cracked?

A random storechain with a random date is almost never right (we've seen gamestop frequently do this in the past).

That sign has been there in that Best Buy since before Christmas, I saw it when I was finishing up my shopping in the middle of December. If I'd thought it would be news I would have taken a picture back then :p

It's been a long time, but I thought the release date for Diablo 2 wasn't announced until just before it actually shipped as well...like a matter of a few weeks.

I doubt that will be possible. All play, even single-player, will need to be constantly authenticated online. Blizzard says it's so that they can prevent cheating and allow single player items to carry over to the online game. But obviously the point is to prevent piracy and the the rest is just a justification for always online DRM.

I think it'll be possible, there were already some emulators worked on during the beta.

ALSO, make sure in your battle.net profile you've opted into beta's such as D3, and make sure to run the hardware thingy.

Yup, done all of that, still no beta invite for my account, or any of my co-workers who have done the same. I know of no one (personally) who is a part of the beta, and it's driving me crazy.

Definitely a torrent 1st day.

When I see the videos of D3, I just don't have the shock and awe i had 10+ years ago when I played it. I don't think that type of game will interest me. Then again I didn't get into Diablo 1 until a year after release.

So, try it see what happens. if I drop it in 48 hours then delete and save myself $60.

It's quite common on tech websites and I use the same signature for all the forums I visit. It allows other users to identify potential issues in configs when diagnosing issues - it just saves me a lot of time. It's certainly not to show off, as my graphics card is over two years old now.

That is indeed the purpose of using bold text, which I use on many occasions to summarise my posts.

I didn't realise that you could "win" a discussion, though considering that you ignored the points I raised and sought to attack my personality I'm not sure we can really class this as a "discussion". In fact all your posts have been very derisive, with no serious attempt to address the subjects at hand; I think that says something about your personality.

Diablo 3 just legitimizes the Ubisoft form of DRM. I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard found a way to charge a monthly fee at some point too. Won't it be fun when you can't play your single player game because of "server maintenance" or some other bs?

It's very distressing, isn't it. I hate how I voluntarily start a download and voluntarily leave an option on to participate in peer-to-peer and then it uses up my bandwidth! Those Blizzard guys really are such sleazebags.
For starters, it's not a "voluntary" download - it's required in order to play the game. Using the game is "voluntary", downloading an update isn't. And the issue about P2P being enabled by default isn't that they don't provide an option to disable it but that it is hidden from the user; further, it's to save them money and increase their profit margin. The whole point is that a lot of users don't know about it, hence the "sleazebags" comments.

Yakubs wrote on Jan 8, 2012, 18:53:
Maybe if you came at it from the angle of Blizzard taking advantage of unsuspecting casuals, you'd have SOME kind of leg to stand on. But given the fact that you self-diagnosed the problem with your bandwidth and (for some bizarre reason) you list your computer specs in your signature, it's hard for me to feel sorry for you.
Hang on, wasn't that the point I was making? Anybody that knows about it can disable it. My problem was that I hadn't used any Blizzard software for years and had forgotten that P2P was enabled by default, which meant my bandwidth was being exploited and the performance of my internet connection tanked - only when I thought to check Netlimiter did I see what was going on. And what the fuck do my computer specs have to do with anything? Is it my fault you game on a laptop with Intel integrated graphics? Just because I managed to spot Blizzard's shitty, sleazy business practices doesn't mean that the situation is somehow acceptable. My problem was that I had to use third party software in order to get acceptable download speeds from Blizzard and to prevent my internet connection from grinding to a halt. But what if someone has an internet connection with bandwidth caps and overage fees? They'll end up with a surprising bill at the end of the months. Steam has NONE of those issues, hence why I made the comparison.

What I don't understand is why ANYONE would want to defend such business practices.

Well I'm on teksavvy, I pay for 25/1, but I regularly get anywhere from 51/1 to 54/1 without speedboost. So yeah, that's pretty normal. It's the caps that suck, especially if you're stuck on incumbent networks. Rogers, Bell are still sucking people with 60-100gb, shaw well 100-300(depending on the area, I know krovven is getting what he's getting my sister only get 60gb in her area of alberta though), and teksavvy, electrobox and a few others are giving 300 to unlimited up here now.

I think this link still works for my last speed test. Though you might need to click on "result as text" since the graphic has expired. It's been a month or so since I last checked. But yeah 6MB/sec down yeah...welcome to 2012.

I don't understand your sarcasm, because that's exactly the point I'm making. When enabled - which it is by default - the upload speed kills my internet connection, making even browsing the web slow down. All because they want to save bandwidth costs to increase their profit margin. Sleazebags.

It's not voluntary though. How is it a real choice when if you don't do it then it takes you a century to download from Blizzard in order to play the product you've paid for? They intentionally restrict their bandwith to force people into using P2P in order to save themselves money. They have every right to do so but it doesn't make them any less sleazy and cheap. I can't believe all you little Activision whores just dying to bend over and take it from Bobby and pay for the experience while you're at it. Absolutely pathetic!

Drama queen much? it's not that serious, every time blizzard news pops up a few of you god damned picket sign guys spew the same ole rhetoric because you all are too lazy to check your options and disable certain 'features' or just want to stir up sh!t for the sake of doing so.

Give it a freaking rest, and put your energy elsewhere.

Corporate whore much, douchebag? It is serious. It's not our fault if you're too dumb and/or lazy to grasp why that is even though it's self-evident to most everyone else. It's been explained to you and your ilk multiple times and you still don't get it and/or care. So when you reward this sort of bad behaviour, yes, you are in fact making the world a worse place.
