Might & Magic Heroes VI Patched

The Might & Magic Website announces the release of a new patch for Might & Magic Heroes VI, updating the turn-based strategy sequel to version 1.2. The download is mirrored on Gamer's Hell, and here are the patch notes:

Major bug fixes (Week of the Plague, Dynasty weapons, unit abilities, scripts, localization)

  • Skirmish AI tweaks:
    • Tries to defend all owned town (previously the AI focused on its starting town)
    • Previously if a hero stronger then the AI's hero threatened a town, the AI hero let that town undefended. Now the AI calculates all of its nearby hero's army and creature growth and defends the town if it finds it possible
    • Always defends the last owned town if it can causes reasonable losses to the attacker hero
    • Huge speed improvement, AI thinking is approximately 2-3 times faster than in the previous version
    • Further improvement of cooperation among primary and secondary heroes
    • Improved exploration and target priority
    • Pre-calculated army contraction. The AI calculates how many creatures can the target collect (including possible creature growth) before the AI's hero can reach it and calculates if it is worth to chase it.
    • Further improvement of Town portal usage
    • In case of an FFA the AI tries to attack and capture towns from a weaker player
    • FIXED: Sometimes the AI attacked a much stronger hero than itself
    • FIXED: Sometimes without reason the AI split its army into 2 and lost against a stronger hero
    • FIXED: Sometimes the AI miscalculated the cost of a town portal and spent too much points before trying to use it (resulting an undefended town)
    • FIXED: The AI ignored some neutral buildings
    • FIXED: Several smaller bug fixes
  • Combat AI tweaks:
    • General target choice improvement for the units
    • Improved ability usage
    • Improved racial ability usage
    • Improved ability selection and different builds for Magic/Might, Tears/Blood heroes
    • Improved creature ability usage
  • Gameplay improvements:
    • The unit setup after using the Tactics ability is remembered from battle to battle
  • Intel support:
    • Fog calculation
    • Variance shadow mapping vs. hardware shadow mapping
  • Balance tweaks:
    • Rage II-IV gives +10 Might Attack instead of +15
    • Rage points generated by attacks reduced to 16(friendly)/8(enemy) (from 20/10)
    • Guardian Angel: Good moral gives 70 racial points (instead of 100)
    • Retribution aura cooldown increased to 5 instead of 3
    • Haste initiative bonus increased to 12 (from 10)
    • Slow initiative reduction increased to 12 (from 10)
    • Mass Haste initiative bonus increased to 6 (from 5)
    • Mass Slow initiative reduction increased to 6 (from 5)
    • Father Sky damage increased to 380 (from 353)
    • Idol of Air damage increased to 276/318/366 (from 240/277/319)
    • Martyr Might Resistance and Health bonus reduced to +10.8%/12.4%/14.3% (from +21.6%,24.9%,28.6% Might Resistance, +13%,15%,17% Health)
    • Hour of Judgement bonus damage increased to 31% (from 21%)
    • Hell Hound Might Defense increased to 5 (from 4)
    • Cerberus Might Defense increased to 6 (from 4)
    • Kirin and Sacred Kirin movement reduced to 6 (from 7)
    • Kirin Magic Defense increased to 33 (from 32)
    • Sacred Kirin Might Defense reduced to 31 (from 33)
    • Sacred Kirin Magic Defense reduced to 33 (from 35)

The first two were great, the rest less so. Although I haven't really looked at this latest version.

The first two were great, but the third one is generally regarded as the best of the series. A sentiment I agree with. I liked em all but IV was definitely the weakest one.

There's a demo for it so give it a whirl. It's HOMM. It's the sort of game you're totally into or not at all. For me it's like crack. I have to force myself to stop playing.

So I have a question - is this game / series any good? I know that it's got a big following and heritage, and also being made of all the things I like (turn based strategy / fantasy setting / 4x gameplay aspects) I really should be loving this game. Unfortunately I tried it (played through the missions of the first campaign map) and it's completely left me cold.

Any 4x potential in it seems to be diminished by the fact that you move a single hero around with the army attached. The battles should be great (I love that Wesnoth / Fall From Heaven way in which your units have a great many attributes and statuses and you can see all the detail) but in fact everything I saw was like 2 stacks versus 2 with little room for tactics apart from what order to attack what. Also the first campaign map at least was very linear!

So I ask - have I just not seen enough of the game yet? Should I ignore the campaign because it's all about the skirmish and multiplayer? Is VI not the best in the series? Do I need my head examined? I would appreciate any thoughts on this, on paper I should be loving it and it's rare that I don't get what a game is at least trying to do.

Goddam I hate Amazon and their US only download games. Bleh, this is on - the Deluxe version at that - for $20 clams. DXHR is on for $10 bones.
You need an American friend to buy it for you. Have him create an Amazon account with one of your email addresses. Buy the game using his credit card. Delete his credit card from the account. Then have him give you the login details. As long as the address on the credit card is a US address this will work.

For Deus Ex HR you could just have him give you the Steam key since that game is Steamworks.

Even a year+ after release, it was still stopping me from playing when ubi's servers went down.
Bet the pirates don't have a problem.
I bet you are right. This kinda stuff only inconveniences legitimate customers. Pirates are like meh and grab the crack.

Its rare to see AI improvements to games nowadays. Glad they are still improving the game.

I'd probably pick this up on a decent sale. But does it have ubi's always on DRM crap? Having that in the latest settlers game annoyed me. Even a year+ after release, it was still stopping me from playing when ubi's servers went down.

yes it does. You an start a game offline, but you won't get access to the relic artifacts you can carry through the entire campaign. AND, if you start a game while you are connected, and it disconnects, it will boot you out of the game without saving it.

I will definitely be buying this if they patch out the always on DRM. In fact, I would have already bought it if not for that.
