Star Wars: The Old Republic Launches

The official website for Star Wars: The Old Republic announces the launch of BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG is underway as planned. The site also offers a launch documentary called Your Saga Begins to mark the occasion. Here's word from the announcement:

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a story-driven, massively multiplayer online (MMO) game from BioWare and LucasArts, breaking new ground in online gaming by delivering high quality, fully voiced storylines with personal choice and consequences. Set thousands of years before the classic Star Wars movies, players will be immersed as they team up with friends online to fight in heroic battles reminiscent of the films, exploring a galaxy of vibrant planets and experiencing visceral Star Wars combat. Players will be asked to join forces with either the Galactic Republic or Sith Empire and choose one of eight iconic Star Wars characters, including the Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper, Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Bounty Hunter and Imperial Agent. Set against a sweeping musical score, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the most emotionally engaging online gaming experience ever.

Take a hike then, don't worry you'll be missed.

Seriously. It's like being anti-gun but going to NRA meetings and then bitching about them. If you don't like the company, leave.

That has to be one short sighted reply from my perspective. In the beta I just went everywhere I could go, what is left to explore? Very little. As to the crafting system, it is so simplistic that people will be bored with it by the end of the month.

This game will be bleeding players well before summer. That is a fact. As to extra content, sure they probably saved some to add, but not enough to keep people occupied very long.

You want facts, SWG was far more advanced than this game and that was made over 10 years ago. There is nothing innovative about this game, it is just a complete rehash of games that preceded it with a Star Wars flare.

Then you have the ridiculous space game on rails that was novel in the nineties. Bioware should just duck and hide for even putting their name on this.

This game is highly typical of what we can expect from a game when Lucas Arts is involved. They are bunch of bumpkins with no clue how to make a game that is interesting. The game is basically a version of Kotor with multiplayer thrown in.

Well said. I played the open beta and 3 solid days in the past week and its already starting to lose its lustre.

I may be bias after 5 years of Wow subscription, but there is nothing new here. They have copied the generic MMO model but added full voice dialogue.

I forsee another short term flare followed by a long term fizzle.

Bring on Blizzard's Titan!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH MOMMY! I NEED BLANKY! Christ almighty, you just never, ever stop fucking whining from top of that ivory little towers of yours, don't you? Doesn't your over the top douchebag attitude crawl up on your own ass? People around you must fucking grind their teeth down to nubs over your superiority complex.

Anyway, if I counter your horseshit arguments you'll just quickly disappear again, like the last time I engaged your straw men bullshit, so on the dipshit list you go. Bye!

Yes, because one guy bitching in a whole thread full of mostly positive comments is so indicative, right Graham? Still building awesome little straw men, I see.

Give us an effin break there guy. There's plenty of stuff we love and we're happy to rave about it when it comes around. The banal and bad stuff gets treated with the scorn and abuse it deserves. No one here takes umbrage with anyone liking something because it suits their style - though we may tease them about it. Where the line is drawn is when in spite of valid criticisms the fanboys have to get all uppity about it and start putting everyone and everything else down to elevate themself and their crappy game. Fact is, I haven't seen anyone saying this is an outight bad game. Many of us are just saying it's a mediocre game at best, so take a pill. You love it and some other people around here do too. Have a big SWTOR parade in the town square if it makes you happy. We're just really curious what most people are going to think of this game in 3-6 months when the shine wears off, and given our experience with similar games in the past we have a pretty fair idea of where that'll be. Fair play. Game on.

Same here.
I am not down with other players running around in my game and paying a monthly subscription since I don't know when I might have time to play and so a lot of money could go to waste.
This is not KOTOR 3, it never was and it never will be - it is impossible by definition, no matter who tries to claim it. Be it a random gamer or Bioware themselves.

20 min queue atm for Dark Reaper. (pvp west coast) I am loving this game. I'm spending most of my time crafting and running space missions. Also learning what I can buy and sell on the GTN. The Queue's haven't really caused much of an issue for me because I have been good about jumping in Queue way ahead of when I want to play and then when I finally get in it's around the time I wanted to play.

I wish they'd let me Queue for one server while I play on another though. I would be pretty happy with the situation if I could work on another character while I'm waiting to get into my main. Right now I have to alt tab and go do laundry, or whatever else needs to be done, read reddit.

There are eight major story lines with multiple light and dark permutations for each encounter. The first flashpoint for the imperials alone plays out in drastically different ways depending on what you do with your first role-play driven encounter. I've never seen anything like this in an MMO, and I've been through a lot of them.

Hudson wrote on Dec 20, 2011, 17:47:
This game IS KOTOR 3.

The question is, how does TOR's storyline stack up against single player RPGs like Fallout or Planescape Torment or the original KOTOR. Saying the stoytelling is great and offers a lot of choices for a MMO doesn't mean shit, because the bar is so low. Bioware's more recent games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect were unimpressive in the storytelling department, and if TOR doesn't surpass Dragon Age and ME1+2 at the very least, then I see no point in playing a staid rehash of WOW.

You're welcome to your opinion, but... Galaxies launched in 2003, and it was garbage then and there's a reason it's not running anymore when Asheron's Call, EQ, and Ultima Online that all predated it by years still are open. The idiotic martyrdom of Galaxies as a great game still baffles me, like watching the PC Gamer webcast of its final moments where people were talking about how great the game was and how sad it was to see it go...yet none of them were actually playing it.

No other MMO has attempted to have storylines and characterization on par with single player games until this one. It's fully voiced, through the entire game, unlike any other MMO before it. Whether you like it or not, it IS doing things differently than other games in the genre, and like it or not that includes the space combat (which is pretty fun, actually, if a short diversion...and they already have plans to improve it).

It's not exactly a startling revelation to find out that a game in a particular genre plays similarly to other games in the same genre.
