Enhanced Skyrim UI

Skyrim Nexus now offers version 1.0 of SkyUI, a user interface enhancement for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda's RPG sequel (thanks Jerykk). Here's word:

SkyUI is mod that aims to improve Skyrim's User Interface by making it easier to use with mouse and keyboard, less wasteful of available screen space and nicer to look at.

We do all that while keeping true to the style of the original UI, so new and old components are integrated seamlessly.

It is not our goal to re-create the complete interface from scratch. Instead we try to identify and change areas that need improvement, while leaving the things that are already good alone.

I was excited about this, but after downloading the archive from Nexus, there's too many other hoops to jump through to get it installed. I'm supposed to use the Nexus Mod tool, which requires an account with Skyrim Nexus and I need to install something called the Skyrim Script Extender.

I think I'll wait until the creation kit is released and we can have somethign that doesn't require 3rd-part software installs

If you want to mod Skyrim, you will definitely want to do at least 2 out of 3 of these things.

1.Sign up an account on Skyrim Nexus. (seriously, how hard is it? If you want to mod skyrim you have no excuse not to. It's your best resource.)

2.Install SKSE. If you plan on modding skyrim you will need to have this sooner or later anyway, as the Oblivion version 'OBSE' was widely used by some of the best, and most feature filled mods. The script extender will allow for many great things in the near future, especially after creation kit is released.

Both are worth your time if you're going to be modding Skyrim. =)

p.s. - as said before, you can skip the mod installer, if you want.

Uh... ever used mods in any other Bethesda game before? Morrowind/Oblivion/FO3/FNV? You're going to need a Nexus account. Register once and it works for all of their game sites. Their mod manager makes keeping mods organized and up to date many times more simple than ever before. And script extenders have pretty much always been needed for the most ambitious mods.

The UI is written in Flash/Scaleform, so the Creation Kit will not be of any use whatsoever to those hoping to mod the UI. Development skills in Flash/Scaleform and the appropriate software is required to mod the UI. Also, Skyrim Script Extender will likely be used for hundreds of mods, just as its predecessors have. Refusing to use it for no specific reason is your choice, but denies access to some wonderful mods down the road. Even now, with SKSE you can get a mod that adds categories to containers, just like your own inventory - and SKSE is required for a mod like that - Skyrim can't support that kind of functionality without it.

There's another UI mod called QD Inventory that features a sortable column of value-to-weight ratio. Doing that little bit of math is actually quite useful and I'd like to see it in SkyUI too.

Also, SkyUI only changed the inventory UI. Chests and NPC trading UIs haven't been touched as yet.

And for the record: Morrowind's drag & drop interface was not as useful as the Darnified Oblivion UI. You couldn't sort your Morrowind inventory by value or weight...so let's just stop being 100% ridiculous, m-kay?

I will take Morrowind's UI over Oblivion's any day, thank you very much.

You're quite welcome. If you're willing to wait that is. The mods that appear first are the ones most in demand and no one's asking for a drag & drop interface a la Morrowind.

Now, I'm not saying it'll never happen because it surely will. Oblivion has a Morrowind style UI mod called wz_Inventory. I believe it has a whopping 181 endorsements. Not bad, I must admit. Of course, it's nowhere near DarnifiedUI's 1515 endorsements...but now I'm just being petty.

My point here is that someone will eventually make a drag & drop UI for Skyrim. And it'll be gangbusters, by gum! Gangbusters!

The large majority of mods like this will require the SKSE, because the in-game scripting functionality simply doesn't allow for the level of customization that the mods require.

As for jumping through hoops... what? You put the SKSE files in your main skyrim folder. That's it. That's literally all the jumping through hoops required to get it to run. Confused

Default UI isn't that bad when you get used to it, when you do, you handle it FAST. The key is using only keyboard and ignoring the mouse.

Yeah, agreed. Most complaints I see are form people who can't stop using the mouse.

The only reason I would get this is the greater sorting options, but it's not worth the hassle for that alone at the moment. Maybe when I play Skyrim again in a couple years and the mod is complete.

Not a bad start but doesn't go nearly far enough. So yeah, I'll wait for someone to do a proper one with the kit. I just want a classic CRPG or even MMO style UI!

Did anyone force you to buy the game on day 1? Did you not know that Skyrim was primarily designed for consoles? Headscratch

Oh well, this is far more usable than what it was.
The problem is, is that they used flash for the UI and while the dev's are helping give element info in the mod forum. There are assets they can't release which means they have to be decompiled, and then they have to ask what each element does in order to 'fix it'. It's a mess to put it bluntly, but once all the UI elements and keys are figured out it'll be easy to rebuild from the ground up, especially since there's a database being built for all the UI keys.

I'll take Oblivion's UI over Skyrim's.

Thank God that I did not have any time to play Skyrim yet. Maybe I should wait a little longer for more useful mods and patches/fixes.

Packing the most info possible on 1 screen is key IMO. Less screens and pages the better.

This is incorrect, you can download the Maunnal Install, then unRar it, copy the 3 folders to your /Data folder. You don't need the 4th folder fmod.

Posted this in the other Skyrim thread:

Another mod that's a great compliment to SkyUI is the Expanded Favorites Menu mod:
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3545

There's a lot of configuration options so using the Nexus Mod Manager to configure this mod to your liking is highly recommended.
-------------------------------------------------------------

This mod and SkyUI really helps with turning the consolized UI into something more PC-centric.

I've been using it for about 12 hours and it works great, especially compared to the original. They have only completed the Inventory so far, Magic screen is next.

Yes, it's Flash based so not only is there no Creation Kit but only Flash programmers can fix it.

Edit: Take a look at this amazing looking ipHud work by IcePenguin, it's great.
