CD Projekt Versus File-Sharers?

TorrentFreak reports that lawyers for CD Projekt are contacting individual file-sharers in Germany offering to settle accusations of pirating The Witcher 2 for 911.80 ($1,183.06). For corroboration, they point to this German page which does mention the game and that figure. Thanks Lance via Techdirt, where they note the danger such a "shakedown" can target innocent parties.

CD Prjoekt has a sensible stance. DRM doesn't benefit the consumer and doesn't do anything to dampen piracy, so they don't include it. However, if people still want to pirate the game then they should face the consequences. It shouldn't be an invitation to pirate the game without consequence, as that's an insult to a publisher that has taken a very pro-gamer stance (something very few have done / been able to do).

Yeah, just define all downloader as freeloaders. Ignore the fact that many poetential customers use filesharing to get a look at the game before buying especially when theres no demo ...
It's an irrelevant "fact", as it still means that person is breaching copyright and opens themselves up to civil action. I pay for all of my games and it's an insult to me that other people feel it is acceptable to pirate everything and then choose what they wish to purchase or at which price to purchase it.

If I don't like the price or restrictions associated with a game then I don't buy it. I passed on Battlefield 3 because it wasn't on Steam; I've passed on Anno 2070 and Batman: Arkham City because the price is too high, etc. Yet pirates are able to download a game, complete it and then decide whether they want to pay for it. Personally I don't care what they do - I used to pirate games before Steam came out - but you can't expect me to have any sympathy when they face a lawsuit against them.

Gamers have it better than ever. All they have to do is wait and the game will be featured in a sale on Steam, sometimes for 75% off. And there are services like Onlive that allow you do demo games, if a demo doesn't already exist.
