DICE's Daniel "zh1nt0" Matros tweets that the Battlefield 3 patch promised for today will not include any changes to voice communication in the military shooter sequel (thanks joao). Here's word:

We´re keeping the voip as it is right now. By increasing to this level of functionality we would have to make the VOIP solution a part of the game installation, which we currently don’t want from a business perspective.

So, I guess what he's really saying is that they don't want to implement VOIP into this game or future game releases because they see Origin/Battlelog as how VOIP will be handled going forward. Friends can bounce from EA game to EA game while never losing their VOIP functionality. At least, that's how I'm reading it.
