Never played Zero Hour, which made sense if I didn't much like the genre or the original game.

Like I said, I hated that I couldn't zoom out more, plus Generals lacked many of the options that I felt Total Annihilation made standard, such as being able to infinitely queue unit factories.
Funny, I couldn't get into TA series. I also was not a fan of Blizzard's RTS games too.

TA single player had two primary flaws, both related to sparseness:
1) The game felt empty. Something about the music and the sound effects, but it felt like you were observing lifeless planets that had robots going to a war with no stakes
2) The maps were often too large. Exacerbating this, buildings you'd see briefly would disappear back into the fog of war, so you'd send a plane out to scout and see where the enemy is, it would get shot down, and either you didn't see anything (because you were doing something else rather than tracking its every move) or, by the time you could respond, you'd completely forgotten exactly where it was.

Multiplayer, though, was excellent, so long as you stuck to smaller maps. Unfortunately most of my friends chose to play without fog of war, which negated much of the depth, but two of us would play each other all the time with it. You'd get into very interesting strategies balancing radar cloaking units with your armies to try to do a sneak attack, or try to hide an entire offensive base while building a smaller, weaker decoy elsewhere.
