Steam Hardware Survey

The November 2011 Steam Hardware & Software Survey is now online. Nothing very surprising there, 59% of GPUs are NVIDIA and 72% of CPUs are Intel. The most typical results are 64-bit Win7, 3 GB of RAM, and an ATI 4800 series GPU. Oh yeah, and 0.69% of Steam users have Microsoft Office FrontPage. Thanks GameSpy.

Why is a hardware survey monitoring what software you have installed?
It is a hardware and software survey. Says so right on the page.

I do think it's a bit ridiculous to have graphs and data from over a year ago, when most of the data is very recent. It really doesn't take much to auto-update graphs. I just don't think Valve gives it much attention.

*pssst* Its not very "interesting" to them

Only a handful of the graphics cards listed in the top percentages aren't crap. I can't believe people try to play games with the rest of those.

That seems wrong. Valve's stats put DX11 cards at 31% of the survey sample, and Win Vista/7 at 75%+ of the sample. How only 5% of the systems can be DX11 capable makes no sense. That would require most DX11 card owners to be using XP, which is silly.

Edit: I figured it out. The DX10/11 5% adoption figure is from May of 2010. It's a year and a half old.

Yeah all the graphs on that page are old, meant to point that out earlier today.

5.6% have DX11? And PC gamers wonder why there are hardly any DirectX 11 games.

Not only that, 25% only have 512MB of VRAM and 43% have 1024MB.

No wonder PC games are at a stand still.

That's weird - even though I'm halfway through the finance on my pc it's still cutting edge according to that survey. Some people do play on piles of shite.

You've had your PC for over a week? Throw that junk away man, its an antique!

Only about 50% of systems are DX10 capable and 5% DX11. Probably because of all the integrated graphics. 2nd most installed OS is win XP, but its down to 17% which is good.

Because you give it permission to? Steam pops up a thing and asks if it can check your installed software list (they aggregate it into a survey). Its not doing this without permission or notification.

BTW, neither gamespy or blue noticed, but the latest software survey was a year ago July 2010. So its been a while since they've asked people to check what software they have installed.

Huh, 59% of GPU's are NVIDIA, but the most typical result is a ATI chipset.

As for the hardware survey monitoring what software you have, you can choose to allow it to look at your software or not
