BTW, for the people who are basically claiming valve is lying about the management style... consider a couple things. That portal 2 development book? The author/journalist was spending time inside of valve for months writing that during the development of portal 2. Pretty sure if they were all lying, he would have picked up on it. And that interview I linked with over 5% of the employees, pretty sure someone would have expressed something if the management wasn't that way. And there's been many other interviews too.
I don't blame people for finding it hard to swallow, gabe says it takes new employees 6 months to accept it, even though they've been told this and shown it during the hiring process.

A) As I've said and quoted, its NOT just gabe, its lots of valve employees. That one interview I linked they interviewed over 5% of the people working at valve. The "strategy" was in large part an accident, more a matter of timing, as are many other success stories in business. For instance, MS became successful since they were the cheapest and most often pirated DOS alternative. Netflix was a dvd renting juggernaut because they scratched an itch and did it first. Steam became successful since they were firstest with the mostest, in digital distribution platform. And it started out as just a way to patch things. Even for years after that all it was was a way to sell valve's own games. They even got sued by their publishing partners for doing it (which is why valve is with EA now for retail distribution). Have you read the interviews where they talk about how it astonished them that the sales strategy worked so well when they tried some experiments? How they made the most profit when they put their own games on the biggest sales? Valve even talks about how they should hire an economist to try and figure some of this stuff out prior to running experiments. No way in heck the steam success story was a planned strategy, feel free to do some research on it. Now they've done some smart moves as its evolved, but it's not something that's been overall planned out.
B) HAHHAAHHAAHAH. Really. You think I'm a rabid valve fanboy? I'm neither a fan boy nor a hater. I've contributed to a lot of valve threads now. You know what I say in a lot of them? That I'm upset at valve for lying and breaking promises about L4D1. This thread here? The one I've replied extensively in? Yeah the one where I criticize valve's management style as being detrimental to its customers in terms of game development. I've mentioned before how I think steam is lacking in many areas (pretty sure its because valve won't bother to hire dedicated UI professionals). For instance, copying over the library search code to the friends list should take valve what, 30 mins? Instead I have to manually look down 3 segments of my 200+ friends list (the currently playing games, the online, and the offline) to locate someone in particular.
Or were you saying I'm a rabid Sony fan boy? It's hard for me to tell what you were trying to convey. I dislike consoles (obsolete hardware that's been holding back game development in general, and PC game development specifically) and I don't own a PS3. I dislike sony's continual attempts to lock people into proprietary media among other things. Oh and I also dislike their arrogance ("ppl will get a second job just to line up to buy our overpriced stuff!")
Just because I'm critical of some facets of Valve and its products, doesn't mean I'm a hater either. I own more than 500 games on steam, I've put hundreds of hours into the L4D games (I've enjoyed them both very much) and TF2. Valve as a whole is one of the few good companies left in both digital game publishing and game development (blizzard used to be one of the others, until they got bought out by activision). But they aren't without fault.
