QUAKE No Longer Indexed in Germany

German publication heise online has word that QUAKE is now legal to publicly sell in Germany after being cleared by the BPjM, Germany's Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons. The game was previously "indexed" as being harmful to minors, but the article notes that such decisions can be appealed after 10 years, and id's 1996 first-person shooter was apparently cleared due to the historical significance of some of its technical breakthroughs. If our understanding of the translation is correct, Zenimax is also seeking to appeal the in indexing of the Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity QUAKE expansions. Thanks Joystiq.

Regarding Wolf in Germany, and I could be imagining this, they did make a version with all the swastikas removed and it passed the test so is was available. This is the part where I'm not sure if I'm wrong or not: I think I heard that despite their efforts, they missed a couple of those offensive symbols buried deep in some level that no-one would ever notice or find and the status was then revoked. This could be coming out of my ass and I don't have any proof or anything.

What's sad is Americans are even dumber.

I looked through your post history and you are definitely fat. Just a heads-up.

I'm sure it has more to do with online sales through Steam and the like.

RTCW would probably be difficult to liberate from its regulations due to the placement of NS symbols throughout the game.

As I understand it, it shipped on release with almost all of the Nazi Symbolism removed and replaced with a different logo. (A wolf)

You don't happen to be British, Sir?

Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

Quake, it's mission packs. Quake 2 & 3 then "Return to CastleWolfenstein"?

The addons were also removed from "Liste A" since they are equal in content ("Inhaltsgleichheit").

Zenimax has to ask the USK for a new age rating, after that the game can be sold in stores publically. (Selling "under the counter" was always legal.)
