That's why it's less than half the price.

I thought it was less than half the price because it doesn't have a picture of an apple on it?

Well, that too.

I'm looking forward to Fire 2, hopefully next year. Don't have the cash now, and it'll give em time to work any issues out.

Having said that, I'd take a fire now, if I had the cash, it looks like a fun little tablet.

My wife loves hers, and I enjoy it quite a bit too. I agree with some reviews that say that the web browsing is (quite frankly) pathetic, and that there's some silly UI decisions that were made, but all in all, if you're an Amazon Prime member and have 200 bucks, it's a perfect portal to all Amazon's content.

Just don't compare it to an iPad, because it's not MEANT to compete with an iPad. That's why it's less than half the price.

The $79 Kindle seems like an absolute winner. The Kindle Touch baffles me, as turning pages just requires more effort (sure, not much more effort, but given the screen size you're repeating that effort hundreds of times per hour.)

The Fire seems cool, but given how absolutely awful my TouchPad is I'm skeptical of cheap tablets. Of tablets as a whole, but especially of cheap ones. Sure, they're fantastic for watching movies on a short flight, but that's about it. Then again, it's worth repeating that the TouchPad is one of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever purchased. I don't know how reviews could gush over it and WebOS when the damn autocorrect often kicks in as I'm typing words rather than as I hit space (it's nearly impossible to not have typos when autocorrect will correct as you type.)

Yea, I have the 79 one that came out a couple months ago. I love it, but I wish I would have bought the Fire. Going to go grab a Fire at Best Buy since I have 15.00 in coupons and a few gift cards left over. Won't cost me much that way.

AnandTech link for Momentus XT isn't really a review... it's a post saying 'look forward to our upcoming review!'

I have a Kindle Fire and agree with Anand's review. It's not an ipad killer but it's the best hardware you can buy for $199. I have rooted mine and installed Opera Mobile and like it better than Amazon's silk browser. The free adobe reader app is also better than the built in pdf reader on the Fire. The first app I bought for it was Sketchbook mobile and it's a slick little app for sketching. This being my first tablet though I am jealous of the ipad sketching/painting app selection compared to android. In the end I have no regrets buying the Fire and like Anand I think amazon will be supporting the device with software improvements over time.
