That's a whole lot of bullshit for a "feature" that should work as advertised, don't update my game if I choose not to.
Steam isn't all warm a fuzzy goodness that people like to believe it is.
This may be Steam just updating the DRM of the game so that it can't be launched without Steam, but I do know that you could get around region restrictions by clicking on the .exe file.

True, but it makes it much more inconvenient. The update may not be directly aimed at region locking but it's probably part of the reason.
