Skyrim does have insane amounts of content. I'm level 27, don't know how many dozens of hours played, a zillion quests pending on my log, and I've barely started the main quest. And I haven't seen a single dragon yet.

I think you need to do the first quest for the Jarl of Whiterun before random dragon encounters start happening (this quest is kindof your introduction to dragon-slaying). That's just a guess, though.

The reason there are so many dragons is because they created so many shouts, each with three words. Some of them are freebies, but still, you need something like 30 souls to unlock them all. Gotta make sure the player has all the resources he needs to play however he wants, without compromise! Heaven forbid we have some scarcity...

The strongest dragons (Ancients and named) start showing up randomly at level 40 or so, but I still occasionally see weaker ones. Not that their strength matters at all once you're maxing out skills and have top-tier equipment, eventually they're all just minor annoyances. I do find it strange that you continue getting attacked after the main quest, though, considering they name you the new dragon lord after you kill Alduin. But I suppose they'd rather sacrifice congruency for convenience.

But at present it feels like the random/lesser dragons should appear about 3-4 times less often than they do now.
I'm betting dragon frequency will be one of the first mods to appear, it can't be that hard to mod. Some people want more, some want less (as seen even in this thread).

I wish the dragon encounters weren't so routine. Instead of having you fight 100 weak dragons, they should have only made a handful of epic level dragons.
Run into an elder bronze yet? At level 40 it chewed me up and one shot me repeatedly.
And these are randomly appearing ones? I'm not that far into the game yet (mid 20s now), but getting one-shot by random encounters sounds somewhat annoying, and a repeat of Oblivion's horrible level-scaling.

Anyway, I tend to agree with Jerykk based on what I've seen of the game so far. Dragons are starting to give me Oblivion-gate deja-vu. The first one I fought was epic (aka hid inside the tower while the guards finished it off), the next couple of dragons were still scary as well, especially the one that ganked me enroute to High Hrothgar. Basically NO places to hide on that narrow path. Sumbitch even ate my horse while I was frantically trying to heal behind a small rock

But now, after having killed 10+ random ones, they're quickly becoming routine/flying upgrade points. Hearing a dragon roar in the distance was a huge tension-builder early in the game, but that's starting to dissipate fast, now. Even though the type of dragons has changed with my level, the difficulty has remained more or less constant, and the pattern of taking one down is always the same. DISCLAIMER: I haven't fought any named ones yet though (with the exception of the very first one), so I'm assuming those will be more epic and considerably harder.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really want randomly appearing super-bossses either, ref. my initial comment about elder bronzes and potential one-shotting. But at present it feels like the random/lesser dragons should appear about 3-4 times less often than they do now.

This is the way I have played all TES games: just do whatever random stuff I run into. It's very non linear and feels natural, but I do miss the structure of the main storyline the designers are trying to tell. But I find myself 50 hours in with only about 25% of the main quest complete, although having a had a blast getting to 50 hours...

I totally agree. But don't worry, soon there will be a mod for that.

I totally concur: do a bit of research, figure out which mods you want, download them, and install them. The difference is really amazing.

Too bad magic is still so poorly done. Destruction is weak and everything else is pointless and boring. Playing a mage I couldn't kill a fucking thing until I got the archmage equipment, and even now the only reason I kill anything is because of broken-ass perk that hitstuns every enemy in the game.

My mage kicks some serious ass. Conjure an atronoch, shoot fireballs, and watch the faces melt. I also have a staff that summons a Daedric. The wards are also very useful against other casters. I use calm a lot too. Turn undead. I don't know how you find this stuff weak and pointless.

Sunk 54 hours into Skyrim since I got it. And I'm still going. Skyrim blows Oblivion right out of the water in terms of.....well, nearly everything.

With Andoran ( http://www.andoran.com/indexen.html ) right around the corner (still slated for 2011 release) you could not have made a better investment ^_^

I'm pretty sure we will be seeing unified mod packages for Oblivion soon like was released for Morrowind recently as well (MGSO). I am 1/3 of the way through with a modding guide for Oblivion as well that has a rather dramatic effect on the vanilla game (i'll leave it up to end-users to decide if they want to change the leveling/xp system)

Also Nehrim was a great TC for Oblivion.

"Reclaiming Sancre Tor" was a mod that looked to add a new (and pretty fully featured) quest line to complete after the main quest in oblivion as well. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40757
Thanks for the info! At some point I'm going to start a new game of oblivion, I never did finish it the first time, and I also like knowing good mods, etc.

According to Steam, I'm in it 58 hours, and I've only done one or two main story quests. Astounding amount of content.

I've played for 57 hours according to Steam... and I haven't progressed the main quest past WhiteRun. 3 days of that was the previous weekend, then 2 days for this weekend... and plus an hour "here and there" after work.

It's not difficult to rack up 50+ hours since launch... especially for people that have played it more durring the work week than I have.
