Diablo III Beta Key Giveaway

Though not noted on the U.S. site, the European Diablo III Page has word on a Diablo III beta key giveaway on the Diablo Facebook Page (thanks Gamer's Hell). Here's word:

Whoa, we're halfway there! If you’re still praying for a Diablo III beta key, take heart. We've gone through half of the keys we're giving out on Facebook, but the glass is still half full, so be sure to sign up for the sweepstakes if you haven’t already. Every Monday, we're picking 200 lucky entrants to receive a key, and every fourth person will hit the jackpot and receive an additional key to give to a friend. Give it a shot!

If you haven't entered yet, you can do so at the Diablo III Beta Key Sweepstakes page.

What a load of complete and utter bullshit that is. If you don't have a facebook account, then you're a potential terrorist? Are you fucking serious?

Touting it's benefit as a networking tool is one thing. Suggesting that anyone who doesn't use it is in some way mentally ill just makes you a complete fucking retard.

nothing to be alarmed at folks, it's just Blizzard promoting their game via Euro Social media. Let's all stop raising our voices about Voyeur-Book, and resume our normal lives, waiting 3 to 6 months for the game to be finally played by the masses, without requiring a VB account. who cares about the beta, it's obviously limited as a propoganda tool, and nothing to do with actual fans of the game.

Or you could just fucking interview like an employer who isn't a fucking tool.

"This person has a GREAT FACEBOOK PAGE they would make AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO OUR TEAM."

I wouldn't have a problem with Facebook in principle aside from the fact that I just don't give a fuck about "social networking", but Facebook is a corporate tool for douchebag advertisers now. "Find us on Facebook!" Kiss my fucking ass.

I'm with you on that. I'm not installing anything to give access to my information for a chance to win a beta spot on a game I'll likely buy, anyway. Especially when I have so much to play right now.

I could care less. It's not like there isn't some entity out there who doesn't know who you are or what you do.....

And all they do is aggregate, so it's less that they care that you, firstname lastname, likes watching Venture Brothers, they care that 28.5% of their customer base likes watching Venture Brothers.

But the whole "install this app" part is what stops me. I'm not installing anything, even if just to my facebook page.

Requiring Facebook is mental! Only in America.

Again, I fail to see how you took what I said as "requiring." No one requires anything. But it's something easy to help distinguish yourselves.

Again, like I'm amazed at how people fail to understand how recruiting works, I'm also amazed at how people fail to understand how your fellow man works. Do you know what people went to high school with you do? They punch you into Facebook to see what you're up to. When you don't show up they assume you're either dead or an antisocial reject. You may not care what they think, but again, you never know when someone you once knew may be able to help you out. Having a simple blank page with a picture, your college and the fact that you like Archer and Breaking Bad will take you 5 minutes and make you seem accessible.

But even then, perhaps the profile is just hard to find, so not a huge deal. ...
Which candidate do you think the recruiter will be acting on?
Obviously this is the difference between Canada and the US. In Canada, requiring something like that is a violation of the employment and hiring act. Plus in Canada, despite being prolific at having FB accounts, privacy of the individual still reigns supreme, because it's protected in codified law.

To plenty of people, having a FB account means that it's a cry for attention, because you don't get enough of it.

Obviously you misunderstand. No one is requiring anything, but it makes someone easier to recommend. This isn't rocket science - anything that fleshes you out more as a normal, enjoyable, intelligent human being will help you get a job. If two candidates are identical on paper but one has an internet presence that shows him as a guy you'd like to work on a project and the other is just a black hole you'd be more likely to pick up the phone and call the first guy. Again, this isn't a requirement, just a way to game human psychology.

And yes, to plenty of people do use it for attention, but that's not its only function, and to avoid it because it can be abused by attention whores makes it seem like you're afraid you would be unable to help yourself from abusing it. Don't like it much? Don't use it much. And block people that abuse it. But to say it's useless and only for attention whores is ridiculous. It's the best way to do any networking. Want a new job? Facebook. Want donations for the charity 5K you're running? Facebook. Want people to help you move? Facebook.

Well no one has made enough of a stink about that if it is illegal. Many of the jobs I see in the Vancouver business sector require candidates to have a LinkedIn profile to be considered. Both Facebook and LinkedIn are online profiles where you can control how much/what information you want to share. I have seen recruiters want other things, including Facebook, before. That is far less common, however.

I'll take the completely open ended, first person, questathalon over the bottle necked, top down, clicktastic drudgeathon.

If I wanted to watch a top down epic that would keep me engauged, I'd befriend some midgets and follow them around town (I smell reality show).

Diablo sucks balls, always has. Fuck Blizzard and their auction house.

What is a huge deal, though? If you're a recruiter you are vouching for the person you pass along to a hiring manager. Let's say you have two resumes you're trying to decide between. On paper both candidates look identical. So you go to Facebook. You type in the first name and see a normal looking person with some interests common to yours. He seems like a safe choice that would fit into any office. You type in the other name and get nothing. You know zero about this person beyond the piece of paper.

Which candidate do you think the recruiter will be acting on?

It always amazes me that people think recruiters work in some vacuum and can be effective with a single sheet of professional claims and perhaps another sheet of generic cover letter. No one reads the cover letter, and after reading even 10 resumes they all blur together. This is why networking gets you jobs - it allows someone to skip the entire resume blitz and instead go right to someone they already know works for the job. When that fails recruiters now use Google, Facebook and LinkedIn to try to find people that they can feel comfortable recommending.

Which actually brings us to the other good part of Facebook - networking. Know that guy that sat next to you in third grade? You stay in his mind if you like the occasional picture of his drooling kid. Then, when an interesting position comes up in his company you're not swinging by out of nowhere when you ask him to pass your resume. Or remember that level designer you met at GDC? You add him as a friend on Facebook and occasionally get into discussions on a new game he mentions playing. Then, when there's an opening in his company you're kind of a buddy, even loosely, that he's happy to recommend.

Or maybe from a generation that doesn't use Facebook much or someone who just doesn't like the superficial yet time consuming nature of it. I have an account that barely gets used, it basically exists so I can keep in touch with people who refuse to use anything but Facebook. The rest of us manage with the telephone, email, text messaging and even actual face to face conversations (whoa!).

Yeah, but the point is you still have an account. You use it a reasonable amount of time and don't indulge in trivialities, but you still have an account.

You don't sit around going "I'm so special, I don't have an account" without realizing it kind of makes you look a bit insane and, these days, potential employers consider it a bad thing. Hell, I once put an ad up on Craigslist for an hour of manual labor and STILL did my hiring based on Facebook. I had 25 responses. I punched every name into Facebook until I found someone I felt I could trust (a local college sophomore.) No Facebook? No way I was letting you into my apartment for an hour.

Eeehhhh... I don't really care to see pictures of my cousins new girlfriend nor do I care what my wife's coworker had for lunch last Wednesday so I don't see a big need for a FB account.

You're missing out on some great stuff. Like all my friends showing pictures of their baby's poop. And their baby's barf. And their baby's new clothes they pooped and barfed on. And the constant updates of what their baby is eating, pooping and barfing. It's like CSI comaparing color consistency texture etc.

......

Yeah you're probably better off
