Skyrim Soars

The Steam Game and Player Statistics Page shows The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the most played game by current player count as of this writing, with more players than all the other games on the list combined. This also show today's peak number of concurrent users for Bethesda's new RPG sequel was 231,593. Thanks Acleacius via FPSWin. Yeah, I agree too. Bethesda did say they were looking into making any sort of improvements to the game in the coming DLC so hopefully they'll give the UI an overhaul. Thing is, it's all been done before. We are more or less asking for the same RPG UI as we've had for 10+ years that other titles have already perfected.

Now, whilst I don't quite share his disdain, I do agree heartily with the part I bolded. Yes, the game is nice to look at but it's not what true CRPG fans want. I'm just afraid that we won't see anymore hardcore(ish) major titles that will be made for us as it's all about pandering to the largest crowd for money now. I suspect that they'll probably do this with the next Fallout game too. Sigh. I dunno. Maybe it's time to find a new hobby.

The part you bolded was the only part of substance. The rest was just an angry ego rant/attack. He's looking for Morrowind and can't find it in Skyrim. Duh, it's a different game. I think the game has just as much or more RPG depth. It was just implemented in different ways. I'm sure there are aspects that Skyrim has that Morrowind does not.

I could type a hypothetical rant saying how angry I am at Bethesda for making Morrowind and that it should at least match up to Skyrim. God what shitty combat, terrible god-awful animations, terrible hideous NPC faces, boring repetitive interiors, etc etc.... Bethesda should jump off a cliff after making Morrowind. And wtf, the sounds are hideous. The user interface in Morrowind is even worse than Skyrim. I could go on..

The UI is a nightmare. Certain keys control multiple functions - for example, the same key that's used for sheathing/readying a weapon is used to drop items from your inventory. Unfortunately, if you change this key, they help dialogs and the key reminders at the bottom left of the screen don't update! They still list what the action is according to default keymapping, so you have to look at what the function was originally assigned to by looking at the manual, then finding out what you assigned it to. Problem is that the manual doesn't say that one key controls several functions like sheathe and drop - you have to figure that out for yourself. This is a complete fail and demands a patch to fix the inconsistency. I can't believe they shipped the game with the UI in this state. Sure, it's a bad design, but beyond that, it's BROKEN!

Still waiting for my copy :-(

Ordered it from Amazon with "guaranteed release-date shipping!"

They emailed me around 1AM PDT telling me it had shipped and would arrive by 3PM PDT today, so I stayed home and waited all day for it to arrive -- it never did.

I'm surrounded by frickin' idiots!

I called Amazon, who apparently couldn't even confirm that FedEx got the package from them (and FedEx didn't know what happened either). Amazon claimed it was "in transit" -- FedEx said "bs!"

Totally bummed Sad

Running great on my system on the Ultra settings too, so it doesn't look half bad either.

What's your video card? Didn't know if I'd be able (once I do pick it up in a month or two) to run it at max or not.

Thanks!

I'm having an effin' blast!!!

It has a nice flavour and look but it's very RPG-lite. Hardly the best game in the series as it's been dumbed down a vast amount for broad audience appeal. I can live with it but it's rather dissapointing. They really should have just gone with the GURPS/FO SPECIAL stats. If I want to build a hulk who can clobber anyone but is dumb as a stump I should be able to. This 3 stat BS of mana/hp/stam is weak, weak sauce. If the console players are too dumb to get it, give thm templates they can use, but don't hobble the game for those of us who want a real CRPG experience.

As someone on the Bethsoft forums put it quite well....

It's been a long time since I've been so cripplingly disappointed with a game. Todd Howard should be ashamed of himself. From the unique, handcrafted master art that was Morrowind, released nearly 10 years ago, to this? To a piece of saturday night entertainment that panders to the lowest common denominator and BLEEDS mind-numbing repetition and lazy design? I've stepped in puddles deeper than this game.

All that with and the irony of a "Play however you want!" slogan slapped on the top. Well, I would, but you're not letting me. Because the game isn't designed to give me a deep, personal experience. The game is designed to impress teenagers with spectacle and explosions and dragons (ooh!) and rob them of their parent's money. And the saddest thing? It's working. So all you connoisseurs of high class gaming? (a title which has been twisted into a false insult by idiots who respect idiocy) You're getting more of the same. Because it sells, and only because it sells. There is no artistic integrity in this game. Not a shred of it. I refuse to believe that, in the 10 years since Morrowind, the Bethesda developers have lost so much common sense and become so infantile to put this on a par with that great game.

Three stats? No classes? No major and minor skills? No birth signs? No weapon deterioration? No crossbows, spears, throwing weapons? No spell making? No potion naming? Where did the medium armour skill go? Where did the unarmed skill go? Where did the unarmoured skill go? What about acrobatics? What about athletics? What about mysticism? Why do I feel tired and uncompelled to search through any of these crates, barrels and bags? Maybe it's the 10 gold and potatoes that I know I'm going to find.

Absurd game. I'm half expecting to check the calendar and realise that it's April 1st. Bethesda hit the promised land of RPGs with Morrowind and ever since then they've been scrambling around trying to figure out what made that game great -- and missing every time.

Please don't make a sequel.

Thanks.

It sucks that my E button decided to die. You know, it really sucks that E being a major vowel and all is used so much. I dont think I really realized that before.

For some reason Skyrim does not appreciate my Sharp Keys programming so I basically have to wait until a modder makes a key bind program that can be used outside of the game.... considering I get stuck on the menu requiring me to press E in order to continue. Not just in the menu but also when it comes time to grab stuff from chests... which requires th push of an E button.

Skyrim has surprised me. It's actually a decent game. Running great on my system on the Ultra settings too, so it doesn't look half bad either.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but I can't wait to see a Fallout game on this engine.

Really, really enjoying this game. They did an awesome job of fleshing out the world so it feels like a real country. I've played for nearly a dozen hours and don't feel like I've scratched the surface.

I just installed nVidiaInspector but there's no Skyrim profile to be found. Not much difference between AO on or off anyway.

You can turn on landscape self-shadowing along with tree shadows in the ini file, which gives AO-like depth to the image and looks great.
