Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Reviews

The reviews are rolling in for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward's and Sledgehammer's new installment in the military shooter series. The PC Gamer review is delayed, since it was next to impossible to figure out what format they would review, and following that theme, most of these are of console versions:. There are write-ups on 1UP, AusGamers, Computer and Video Games, Destructoid, Edge, Eurogamer, Game Chronicles, GameInformer, GameSpot, GamesRadar, gamesTM, Gametrailers, Giant Bomb, Guardian.co.uk, IGN, Joystiq, Official XBOX Magazine, RobotGeek, Shacknews, Telegraph, and VideoGamer.

Too many people complaining about the single player. If you ever thought these games had anything to do with single player whatsoever, you rode on the short bus as a kid. This game has about as much to do with single player as World of Warcraft, haha.

I think you're confused mate, because that's something to be said about BF3, not MW3.

Black Ops hit a home run with the really rather huge amount of offline content stuffed onto that disk, and while I'd say there's not quite as much with MW3, there's still plenty to do for those of us not really into multiplayer.

I'm all for you spending your time in multiplayer if that's what floats your boat, but that's a door that swings both ways.

Played MW and MW2 single player for about 5-6 hours. Played them online for 100's.

If you don't want to buy it, don't. They'll be laughing all the way to the bank with their $1+ billion in sales.

To celebrate the release of MW3 I'm going back to play through the original Modern Warfare. MW2 and Black Ops were so unbelievably dull that I honestly have no actual memory of Black Ops at all, and the only memories I have of MW2 are of defending/escorting the tank and running around in the city with the power out. That's about it.

I wish they'd remember what made the original MW single player game so much fun: Great pacing and a high-action Tom Clancy feel instead of a Bruckheimer film.

What I don't understand is that most of these reviews start off complaining about certain aspects of the game; the monotony, flat, forgettable, trite storyline, and rehashed gameplay. Then they go on to say that it is a great game that lives up to the hype. So which is it? Reviewers don't have to tear the game apart, as with the Gamasutra RAGE interview, but some consistency in opinion would be nice.

I also believe reviewers may be confined to only PR supplied screenshots. I remember this back around 10 years ago when I worked at EA and Eidos.

Interesting, how most of the reviews show the exact same screenshots... Why is that? Too complicated to press the screenshot key/button during play? Ok, you actually had to play it for this to be possible...

These aren't PC reviews... Very few people have the special capture hardware you'd need to take screenshots from a console game, so they just use the ones provided by PR.

Out of all those sites I'm sure one has a video capture card.

From what I gather, some of the slightly more knowledgeable players are saying it really is a rehash, which is good. I can't even think about people signing up for Elite, though. IIRC it requires personal info to even sign up, too... Like I'd want to give Activi$ion any personal info.

I have people on my friendlist (Xbox 360) that completely skipped BF3 to get MW3, and they haven't even played the multiplayer yet... *shrug*

Though, personally, BF3 has some gapingly horrible design decisions (WHY ARE ALL THE LIGHTS SO POWERFULLY BRIGHT? Y U NO SPAWN PROTECTION?), so I can't even say for certain that I thoroughly enjoyed it, either.

I wonder if this will sell 20+ million units like Black Ops. If it doesn't, that will be a good sign. It'll mean that people are finally getting tired of the series.

It will, but every review I've read has said "it's getting stale." Most reviews seem to have knocked off 5 points for that.

MW was a trilogy. I'm guessing IW may do Near-Future Warfare next. It's enough of a change of pace. And if they finally learn how to not overuse infinite spawning...

reviews on metacritic are... interesting. critics are mostly raving, user reviews across all platforms are predominantly scathing, most with the same "graphics suck, there is nothing new here" tone. I'm just a little baffled at the hordes of people who bought this genuinely expecting something different. *shrug*

How many of those do you think bought it?
By and large people that buy a game at midnight and play it all evening long are going to love the game even if it sucks. They're the wheelhouse for the game. They're the ones that want more of the same everything.
And those people reviewing on metacritic are claiming to have stood in line at midnight, come home, played it, and written the review. Best case they've had the game 12 hours. Worst 9.

Given this, how many of those user reviews do you think are valid?
How many are BF3 fans that haven't played?
How many hate Activision and haven't played?

I'm not saying the game is great, or even good. I'm saying 99% of those reviews are from fanboy idiots. Much like every 10 that would show up right now would be.

Haven't bought a CoD game since the first Modern Warfare.

Have zero interest in this one.

You will be waiting a long time, they aren't any cheaper for years.
