Steam Forums Hacked?

The Steam Users' Forums currently offer the following message: "The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated." This may be just normal maintenance, but we have also seen an image suggesting they were compromised in some manner, and for a while were directing users to a site offering ways to cheat at games, so this may be what Valve is in the process of cleaning up. We'll pass on posting the screenshot to avoid advertising the site, and are waiting to see if Valve has a response to our questions about this (it's still early on the west coast). Thanks Joao.

I hope the hackers did not steal the Half-Life 2: Epsiode 3 source code.
Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

It's official, Steam forums were hacked, Eurogamer and PC gamer amongst others are reporting it now.

It's interesting to see that you consider it "official" based on those reports, as they are based on *exactly* the same information as ours is.

I'm also fascinated by their decision to post screenshots showing the URL the hack was allegedly pointing to. Seems to fall into the "more harm than good" category.

True, this is a real case where posting the shots and drawing attention to that site is very harmful. As for being official, if those shots are real then there's a very high possibility they were indeed hacked, at least the forum part. I can't see any other explanation other than a nasty prank.

Also heard there were people receiving emails from the steampowered webmaster advertising the site. The people at fpsadmin.com are commenting that they did receive the email. It's all very weird and odd and a bit scary since if this is confirmed as a hack, even if it only affects the forum part, then this may be the first relatively major hack against Valve since the HL2 source leak.

I dont see nuthin....looks like maintenance to me

Generally when something is hacked, you tend to want to take it down an restore it to it's original state, as well as patch whatever hole got exploited.

Crazy, I know...

Dear Hackers,

Go hack something useful, like terrorist or child porn websites.

Sincerely Yours,
Everyone in existence
