More Origin Spyware Accusations

SystemLink has a video from a German gamer (thanks Joao) showing what's alleged to be spyware activity from Origin, EA's online service. This uses a process monitor to attempt to show what sort of data from your system is being reported back to Electronic Arts. Eurogamer has EA's response to this, which denies any wrongdoing:

EA Germany has now updated Origin's terms of service in response to the furore and issued a statement denying its software was spyware.

"We have updated the End User License Agreement of Origin, in the interests of our players to create more clarity," EA Germany announced in a statement yesterday. "Origin is not spyware. Neither do we use nor install spyware on the PCs of users.

"We do not have access to information such as pictures, documents or personal data, which have nothing to do with the execution of the Origin program on the system of the player, neither will they be collected by us.

"EA takes the privacy of its users very seriously. We have taken every precaution to protect the personal and anonymous user data collected."

these stupid conspiracies need to stop. You don't see any outrage from Steam, because of all the fanboys despite Valve collecting the same data.
Probably because valve ASKS you before it collects your computer stats for their hardware survey. I.e. valve is opt-IN, whereas sounds like EA is opt-OUT (assuming they even have a way to do that).

Yes they have an opt-OUT option, it's in the EULA, if you don't agree you have the option to not install Origin.

I've got a solution to the origin problem, might be too much trouble for most people. Since I'm really tempted about getting SWtOR but in no way trust ea.

Thinking about making a new email, just for ea. I will very rarely if ever check. Then using a spare drive, just installing the basics OS, video drivers, Firefox, Thunderbird and maybe Zone Alarm.

Well, that's if I do decide to get the game.

The worst part of all of this, is these bastards at ea have the rights to one of my favorite games, System Shock 2. I know they have kept from putting it on any other service because of origin.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Steam may very well do the same thing. I honestly couldn't tell you what data Steam collects. I don't get any Gabe Newell-endorsed erectile dysfunction product emails, so I just don't worry about it. As much as I detest EA and Origin, I'm trying to think what data they could collect from my PC that would bother me or somehow affect me and I'm coming up empty. Though that could just be because I am extraordinarily dull in every way...

It's pretty easy to replicate the behavior in the video. Just google Process Monitor and download it from Microsoft. Filter for Steam.exe and run the program. You'll see it accesses some windows dlls and mostly stuff from the Steam directory.

Then do the same but replace the filter with Origin.exe. It will suddenly start scanning EVERYTHING in program files.

The problem I have is that they will take my information from my machine and my actions and sell it. They are willing to commodify my existence without giving me a cut of financial gain or the opportunity to say "no don't do that" without wrapping it up in legalese in tiny print on page 103 of a EULA.

That is just treating me the customer like shit.

It sucks. I am not pork bellies nor some stock to be traded in for cash or service. I am a human, and I want the right to control how other legal fictions (corporations) make money off of me or trade in my identity.

This is not complicated.

Where and when does Steam monitor Skype logs? Steam has a ridiculous amount of scrutiny on it and they collect practically no information outside of platform use. People even complain Valve Anti-Cheat isn't thorough enough and want it to be less passive.

did you know EA works for the reptilian aliens? they are collecting data on you so they can figure out your DNA code, and then steal your genetic materials while you sleep with nano-tractor-beam technology - then they will plug the data into their massive mind-control spider-web-wetwork-net and you will become a zombie slave to their heinous machinations

true story, better logoff and burn your computer quick

So you do not collect personal data but protect the personal data collected?

They have personal data from your credit card and registration information that you provided, they don't have access to personal data on your PC that you didn't provide just because you installed Origin.

Yet as it shows on that video, Origin monitors and logs Skype.

Now why would they need to do that?

People don't trust EA with good cause. If EA told me it was raining, I'd check to make sure it wasn't suits taking a piss on me.

Since I'd already decided not to use Origin for any reason this won't affect me directly, but I appreciate EA working so hard to justify my decision.
