BlizzCon Hate-Speech Criticized

The closing performance at BlizzCon 2011 by Level 90 Epic Tauren Chieftain has drawn fire from GLAAD for anti-gay slurs in a lead-in video from guest singer George 'Corpseater' Fisher from Cannibal Corpse, reports GayGamer. Word is: "The problem? His hate for the Alliance. Specifically, the anti-gay language used to describe them. Though bleeped-out, Fisher's diatribe calls Alliance players a number of anti-gay slurs, and declares that they should die." They say this "has prompted GLAAD to initiate an outreach to Blizzard." VG247 notes the following official comment on this from Blizzard:

Thank you everyone for your feedback regarding the closing night performance at BlizzCon. While we had some other messaging worked up we were going to post, the members of band wanted to instead address it themselves:

Hey guys, we read and heard all the feedback from BlizzCon this year. The Corpsegrinder bit was never intended to be taken seriously. We are sorry that we offended anyone; everything at our shows is just meant in fun. Thank you all for speaking up. We’ll definitely keep this in mind for future shows.

Our humblest apologies,

Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftain

Probably not. So why is this different? Because you're not personally affected?

Maybe if Mike Morhaime came out and said it it would raise an issue with his position within Blizzard and whatnot...

...but coming from George Fisher, I'm not shocked at all by what he said or will ever say which may be attributed through desensitization brought on by his career in music and personality.

It's funny because on his wiki page, the only controversy listed is this incident at Blizzcon.

I believe you're on a privately owned board, and your rights don't apply here.

I think some needs to go and read the constitution. Private board or not, that does not exclude our right to free speech.

Oh yes it does. Blue can do whatever he wants here. Are you going to draw up court papers about how some stranger won't let you say what you want on a board he runs? Good luck with that. Please PDF the copies, I'd love to read them.

Also, where do people like you draw the line?
If he had said "The Alliance are a bunch of [n-word]s and we should kill them all!" would that have been ok to you?
What if he came out in blackface? Would that have been cool?
What if he came out and said "I can't wait for WoW to be on the Xbox. PC gamers are all virgins that are too fat to even touch themselves!" Would you guys have been ok with that?
Yes. Those are all fine, for a very obvious reason. If one segment of the population uses any of those with impunity all segments of the population should be able to use those with impunity. And various 'groups' do and have said things like that.

Probably not. So why is this different? Because you're not personally affected?

Also, it's hysterical how some morons turn this into religion or politics.
Don't worry when things fly over your head, speech is political these days. I live in a country with a 'hate crime' law, which criminalizes speech. And can be fined, and thrown into jail without due process by a kangeroo court that exists outside the normal courts thanks.

Yep. Moron indeed, some of us just happen to see what happens when political and special interest groups do when they criminalize speech.

Society needs to stop coddling people that can't think before they speak!
Why? Can't you make your own choices based on what you choose? Do you need someone to tell you what speech is okay and what speech isn't? What your opinions, thoughts, and feelings on a subject should be? Perhaps we should let people be people, and let the individual admonish or support their opinions and beliefs by the person, instead of having "political correctness" and special interest groups, neuter speech out from people.

You do realize the hypocrisy here in not letting me be people, right?

He said Alliance were fags and that they should die. One could interpret that as incitement of violence against gays. Calling them fags is one thing, but calling them fags AND saying they should die is another.

No, you're looking too far in to it. The entire reason it was done was to incite Horde faction pride which usually involves Horde ripping in to the Alliance since Alliance has poor representation within L90ETC. With George Fishier in the mix, no one should really be shocked with what comes out of his mouth.

Realize that the Horde has some serious fans which can border on crazy. Some get tattoos, make ugly car decals, create songs or machinima, wear T shirts, and scream Lok'tar Ogar in real life whereas the Alliance are usually singled out whenever possible.

This should simply be taken as one of those example of Horde pride which deviates from what we typically see. The only difference is is that this was done by Blizzard at Blizzcon as opposed to some kid with a garage band posting the video to youtube.

The problem really lies in the way everyone is coddled and everything has to be so politically correct as to not offend any group or individual these days. To me it's just sad that the liberal ideology movement wants to pussify the world so as to not hurt little bobby's feelings because someone called him gay in jest or teasing.

To people that get offended at things like this that aren't meant to be serious I have one suggestion, pull up your big girl panties and grow a pair.

Just lock the thread now Blue, I'm sure it will not take long for this topic discussion to go from games centric to Religion & Politics.

Well it would be unfortunate to have to lock a thread about the implications of free speech... if irony was inflammable we might start a fire. I agree though, that there's no need for this to get into a religious debate, so having responded to that post, I'll most likely delete future attempts to take this thread down that path.

Funny Blues how you talk about free speech yet you removed my comment about Gays and their weird ways... Nice!!!

Where’s my free speech when you removed it? I believe I’m guaranteed my rights under the current constitution.

They were expecting political correctness from a guy who's album covers feature dead babies and such?

He probably thought he was just doing a good job of sounding exactly like 85% of all WoW players in-game.

You can't go ten minutes with someone calling you a fag.

Good point.

Yes, this 'Hate Speech' was extreme and unnecessary.

So, to expand on your comments, if I may, for example - I wonder why a comedian can make a heterosexual joke, and heterosexuals find it funny and entertaining, but if a comedian makes a homosexual/gay joke, most of the gays are up in arms and scream that it is offensive blah, blah, blah. Heterosexuals laugh because they are comfortable with their sexuality, so if homosexuals ‘REALLY’ felt right and comfortable with their sexuality they shouldn’t find it offensive, but funny/entertaining.

They should just rename the band the Hannah Montana Experience now because that's where this is heading for next year.
