Bloodlines/Dead State Interview

The Brian Mitsoda Interview on Grupo 97 is an English version of a Q&A also available in Spanish talking with the writer from Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines about Dead State, the zombie-themed role-playing game in development at Iron Lore Studios. Along the way he talks about the launch of Bloodlines, which offers some insights into how this lead to Troika's demise:

Well, some of that was due to deadlines, and a lot of it was the team’s own devotion to putting out the best possible game they could in the time remaining. That turned into a lot of late nights on our own time to try and make the game better. In the end, there was only so much we could do or were allowed to do and it was taken out of our hands. Would more time have helped? Yeah, most developers will always want more time to polish their games and Bloodlines needed some more time. We were also released against multiple big name sequels (Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3) and that kind of hurt our initial sales too, so holding the title to a less crowded release window would have helped too. I have no idea what the sales figures are now, but I’m betting that Bloodlines has beat sales expectations over time.

As much as I liked Troika, their products were all released in poor condition and I don't think an extra couple months would've helped very much. They were overly ambitious and tried to squeeze far too much buggy, unfinished content into their games. Arcanum could probably have lost 1/3 of the game world without anyone noticing.
Or they knew what the best RPG possible atm could be and desperately tried to make the game. Knowing they were on the right track and could have pulled it off.

However due to the Absolute Fucking Nightmare of trying to Trouble Shoot the most complex game of choices and consequences at the time the publisher didn't get it. They forced the game out early, losing Massive sales and Game Awards.

This turned out to be a proven fact in time, for ALL their games. Especially since each of their games were so loved by the community Unofficial Patches were created by fans, trying to complete the master pieces.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history.....and they are stupid. Dwight D. Eisenhower
