Do DVDs and DVD players typically get lumped together? Music and iPods? Serious, curious question here. Exactly. They shouldn't be grouped together, unless trying to make a specific point. All the consoles already have a large userbase, therefore the trends in software sales are far more important. For instance, if they're still selling new consoles but there's a decline in software sales then that would be concerning.
Also, it's the profitability that is most important. It doesn't matter if console sales dropped 31% if they're actually generating more profit through cost reductions in manufacturing. |

Some people care about attach rates for certain titles or if a title's release pushed sales for the hardware. I'm sure Ocarina of Time for the 3DS caused 3DS sales to spike somewhat. Just another way to view the data that some people find value in. |

The September data I have is a little spotty right now so I don't trust the numbers for it yet but it doesn't look good. The PS3 price drop helped it do far better than the 360 and the WII (which has been abysmal), but still not as good as last year. |

Except for the WII and NDS those have been doing horrible all year long down ~30% on average. They are making that up slightly with the 3DS now selling "decent" with its price drop, but nowhere near what they expected or what the NDS has done in the past. |

| Considering that prices of all the consoles came down in the last year, it's definitely possible that the volume of units sold might still be holding steady or even possibly increasing and they are still generating less revenues for the manufacturers. Would be interesting to see an estimate of units sold. The LA Times article doesn't mention those numbers. |
