Xbox LIVE Hacking?

Ars Technica reports having received "a number of reports" from Xbox LIVE account holders saying they have had unauthorized purchases charged to their accounts. According to the stories they share, this seems to somehow center on FIFA 11 and FIFA 12, as users see they have achievements in these games, in spite of not owning them, and the purloined space bucks were used to by in-game items for the association football/soccer games.

This happened to me, they spent $150 on ms points at 7:30 am. I don't play games online and use my Xbox mostly for movies. I reported this at end of August. THEN they told me this will take 30 days to investigate. THEN they told me that 30 BUSINESS days and I should stop asking for my money back so soon.

They can go fuck themselves as far as I'm concerned.

You can do either way on Amazon. But instant codes are never on sale. Amazon will have the cards are deep discounts during the year.

Instead, I've gone with a family membership. That way my brother and I each get it for $50 per year, and we each get an extra account to use.

Are there pros and cons to the family membership? I get notices to change it over all the time, but I am the only one that uses the account/xbox, etc....

I don't have the CC in my account, I have Paypal however. I am thinking of just getting a prepaid CC and add that so I can remove my Paypal.
However I think Paypal might be a little safer to have attached to your account then CC numbers.

Yeah Forza is awesome. Loving that game.

I buy membership card numbers and points numbers from amazon so no information is in there. I don't trust em at all.

Do they send you a code immediately, or just a card in the mail? If they did codes instantly, I'd definitely do that for future purchases.

I usually don't let my subscription run out. Those subscription cards can stack anyways, I think you can stack 3 or 4 years up front. I am paid up until Feb 2013 right now. I usually buy the sub cards when they are on sale. If I wait until my sub runs out I may have to buy the card at the full price to stay Gold.

I usually always just buy the prepaid Live Gold or points cards from the store and redeem them, this $1/month offer was the first time in the past few years I've added my Paypal to the account. Was too good of a deal to pass it up.

I've told this story here before, but I bought a 1 year card very cheaply online. I didn't enter it immediately, though, and held onto it until my subscription lapsed. There was a 30 or so day grace period, and then I was reduced to Silver. So I tried to enter the code.

Would not accept it.

So I called Microsoft. Turns out you can't redeem codes unless your account is current. So I had to enter my credit card and buy a year before I could redeem the year card I had. I was forced to get 2 years at that point.

Drove me insane. Don't get me wrong, I'll use those two years, but that logic was ridiculous.

I normally do that too, but recently they had an offer for $1/month for Xbox Live. They had some sort of a glitch in the system and it allowed people to buy as many months as they wanted for $1. Only catch was that you had to add a CC number or Paypal in order to pay for it.

I took advantage on that offer, $12/year Live Gold. Ones you add your Paypal or CC number they need another CC# if you want to remove the old one. I usually just get a prepaid CC and put that number in so I can remove my main CC#. Since I've used Paypal the last time I wasn't sure if that is safe enough to leave it registered or not, most people said Paypal is much better than having a CC registered with Microsoft, but I agree I probably should remove that and just add a $20 prepaid Mastercard number or something, that way I am safe.

I usually always just buy the prepaid Live Gold or points cards from the store and redeem them, this $1/month offer was the first time in the past few years I've added my Paypal to the account. Was too good of a deal to pass it up.

The worst part is how difficult it is to remove a credit card entered into their system. I don't think you can, truthfully. At least not without entering another one. I went insane with that before I just gave in and accepted it. I keep it an Amex Platinum, though, so I know I'll have zero issue disputing any charges.

I just updated my card the other day for Forza 4 (which is a blast BTW), but there's no sense in keeping it in there, so it's removed now.

This has been going on for awhile. The only real mystery now is why hasn't MS actually commented on it? Or have they and I missed it?

Yep this happened to me. Somehow they used FIFA 12 to rob $50 worth of points from me that I bought only a few days prior.

Good thing I no longer keep a CC on my account.
