This interview on Skewed and Reviewed talks with Jon Jacob about Hunt The THING, a new CryENGINE 2 MMOFPS tie-in with The Thing, both the John Carpenter movie and the upcoming prequel. Jon is the NEVERDIE famed for buying and selling virtual items for record prices in Entropia Universe, and the game is a product of Neverdie Studios as part of their ROCKtropia virtual world, which itself is a subset of the Entropia Universe. Here are a couple of answers that outline how this all works:

How did the idea for the game come about and what is the background and setting for the game and how close does it follow the new and previous film?

We were discussing with Universal the possibility of using ROCKtropia as a backdrop for Movie length MMO’s and The THING stood out as a perfect fit. Our Platform Entropia universe features the Cryengine2 which is an amzing graphics engine for creating stunning Landscapes and the Antarctic is such a powerful setting. We chose to draw our inspiration primarily from both John Carpenters’ The THING and the upcoming prequal, but our story is set on our Virtual World ROCKtropia which exists in a parallel Universe so we are not Locked into the specific storylines of the movie.

How is player vs. player going to be handled?

Well since this is a free to play adventure inside an MMO with a micro transaction economy, you need to be super careful with Your free Ammo, if you blow too much, then you are going to have to visit the Supply Dump and try to pick up enough free oil barrels to trade for ammo, but the supply dump is a PVP combat Zone, so You are gonna have to fight for it. When you are ready for your final showdown with The THING, you are also going to be in a PVP combat zone so you are going to need to make alliances to survive.

ah, I thought The THing 1982 was a remake of The Thing from Another World 1951. It is also set in the poles.....probably could deduce that since the monster was in a block of ice and they thaw him.....so yea, it is the 3rd movie.

Even the wiki for the 82 movie says it is a remake of the 51 movie....so relax nancy....

No, what I meant was the trust system was total crap.

The game itself was kind of bland and kind of annoying but maybe a 6.5 out of 10. Worth it if you had nothing else to play and could pick it up for $20.

I wasn't that much of a fan for the game. The camera and controls were a little wonky and the trust system had little to no overall impact on the game which was unfortunate since it was the top feature of the game. The graphics, on the other hand, were spot on and the fire effects were top notch for the time. Anyway, I am looking forward to the new movie. I love the original Carpenter film, and the game that came out a few years ago was pretty good as well. This game, however, sounds like crap.

Agreed, the PS2/PC game was surprisingly good, it just had a few flawed mechanics and some control niggles that really detracted from the experience. It's a shame that many people wrote it off without trying it.
