Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Confirmed

The PC PowerPlay Website has a preview of the next print issue of this Australian gaming magazine, which offers a confirmation of various indications that multiplayer support will be included in Mass Effect 3, BioWare's upcoming action/RPG sequel (thanks Joystiq). They show the magazine cover which mentions the multiplayer reveal, and offer the following description:

That’s right - Mass Effect 3 is getting multiplayer! We travel to BioWare’s office in Edmonton for hands-on time with the series’ first foray into online gameplay, and chat with Mass Effect Series Producer and Mass Effect 3 Project Director Casey Hudson about the decision to go multiplayer in the epic battle for the galaxy.

I was totally underwhelmed with ME2, and the addition of multiplayer to ME3 only makes me less interested because it means they are taking away resources that could have been making the single player game better to work on a feature that I don't care about. Plus, fuck EA. Might pick it up when all the ineveitable DLC has been trickled out and they have bundled up for dirt cheap. Maybe.

If it's simple coop where your friends can control your allies, but are tethered to the main player, it should be fine and fun. But if they actually tried to make a competitive multiplayer mode... yikes.

Creston Yeah... and the stupid thing is that they're going to waste time and resources on multiplayer and like 2000 people will play it and it will die quietly like 99% of the other multiplayer games do. It's like Bioware wants me to stop buying their games. I really don't get it. They're doing everything they can categorically to torpedo my business. I agree that ME3 is going from a day-one buy down to "we'll wait and see". The only real footage I've seen so far of ME3 is a rail shooter section and now there's multiplayer. My magic 8-ball just came up with "outlook not so good".

Hmm, well this is definitely "not good" news, but whether it's simply "meh", or "you fucking idiots!" news is going to depend on what form it takes. If they somehow managed to avoid having the MP impact the SP side at all, then I'll be ambivalent about this, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Normally I'm reluctant to jump on the, "this will kill SP!" bandwagon, but with the production schedule already so tight, it would have been impressive if they could have pulled off a quality single-player game in that amount of time. I'm getting a little worried.

This was gonna be a day one purchase. Now it is a wait and see. I love story driven sp experiences and was pleased with both ME 1 & 2. However, if the multiplayer takes anything away from the single player experience... then I am out.

Fuck multiplayer, fuck co-op and fuck all this online horse shit. I am so sick of every game having some shitty, tacked on form of multiplayer that nobody will ever touch. If I want multiplayer, I'll play a good game like TF2 or L4D2 or an MMO. Not some half-baked bullshit. Long-live single player.

Hehe, also notice how that mag-shot teases us by not including Tali, Legion and Garrus - the most "popular" characters ;p Instead showing us 2 generic armors and liara, which after ME2 is not really as popular... So that cover was made by someone who has no clue about Mass Effect ^^
