RAGE Patched

Steam News has details on a new patch for RAGE that's now automatically available to update id Software's first -person shooter. The lengthy patch notes go into extreme detail on what the patch does, as it offers access to many graphics settings not present in the release version of the game. Here's the into which explains this:

RAGE defaults to lower video settings to allow the game to work on a wide variety of hardware and software configurations. Unfortunately, it is not possible to anticipate all possible graphics driver issues in combination with unique end user hardware and software configurations. For this reason RAGE does not automatically increase video/graphics settings as this could result in negative side effects on specific hardware and software configurations. The original release of RAGE does not expose many video/graphics options for people to tweak because some of these settings, although desirable from a quality perspective, simply will not work on specific configurations either due to hardware limitations and/or driver bugs. Due to popular demand for more video and graphics options, this patch updates the video settings menu and exposes several quality and performance settings. However, not everyone may be able to increase the settings due to hardware limitations and/or driver bugs.

The Bethesda Blog summarizes the patch notes:

  • Implemented workaround for AMD driver crash right after intro cinematic on Win 7 32-bit systems.
  • Disabled UBOs because they are causing animation issues with AMD drivers. Don’t allow swap-tear to be enabled on AMD while the extension is not exposed because it may crash.
  • Support for new video settings: “texture cache”, “vsync”, and ”anisotropic filter”
  • Automatically adjust vt_maxPPF based on the number of available cores.
  • Improved performance for SLI cards when GPU transcode is enabled.
  • Fix for GPU Transcoding option being disabled after exiting gameplay.
  • Added safe mode to restore video settings to default values.
  • Allow g_fov to be changed from the RAGE launch options in Steam.
  • Server now forwards text chat from clients to all other clients while in-game.

Are you really childish enough to think computer gaming platforms haven't changed in 15 years?

Not to the better thats for sure!!

It's just one problem after the other...

So now that I could play I tried to do Coop with a friend. Clicking Multiplayer the game relaunches, losing the +jobs_numThreads 0 from the Steam Launch settings and because Catalyst AI is on, the game freezes and chugs. Placing this in rageConfig.cfg does not seem to retain the setting either.

How do we get +jobs_numThreads 0 to get executed when the game switches to Multiplayer?

After this patch I can't get it to even start in steam.I was using 11.9 cat and it was working fine.Does anyone in here know how to get rid of the patch and go back to where I was?I was enjoying the game once I used the 11.9's.

I'm having a blast with RAGE! With this latest patch I haven't even seen a glitch yet! On PC and had it from day 1: so I went through the AMD driver debacle. Using all the highest settings an I rarely have texture pop-in: it just works and I have to purposely turn really fast to get some pop-in. I know others aren't having as good a game as I am. It's too bad that Carmack and Co. are taking a lot of heat for what was a cluster-f*ck on AMD's end. I'd be super pissed if I was him: AMD spoiled his launch. Sure people would still have had problems but there would have been far fewer problems if AMD weren't so incompetent.

Gameplay wise: this game is great, FPS parts have solid weapons and combat and vehicle parts also just feel "good" with cinematic gameplay to go with them!

20 hours in, still on my first playthrough, game rocks. Gotta love the attention to detail. With all the ambient sounds and eye candy the levels are so alive. Weapons are done perfectly, sound and look just right. The AI are awesome, best I've ever seen in a game. Vehicles are so well done could be a game of its own. Sure there is texturepop, prefer that over objectpop, and I've not had a hiccup the entire game, smooth as silk on my PS3. Another great game from Id... I will say though there are in a few places some really lazy level blockage (invisible walls) noticed it a few places early in the game, not so much later on.

REALLY Johnny? What was the platform that launched id Software and got you your Ferraris? DICK!

That was about 15 years ago. Business models that worked 15 years ago result in your Ferrari getting repossessed now. Are you really childish enough to think computer gaming platforms haven't changed in 15 years?

Yet another boring game from id and my last pre-order. I knew I should have waited for reviews before purchase, just like I do with most games. I guess I was just excited, for a new id game after how many years?

Oh well, I'm sure Valve will release another cool game sometime soon ...

I like how they paint the lack of graphics options as not exposing them so that it wouldn't enable features on graphics cards which would not work, when that's exactly what the automatic system was doing. Then you see the patch notes where they disable the features that were breaking it. If they had had an option "use UBOs" in the configuration menu, people could have just fixed the issues themselves.

I do have to admire the fact that, at least from my point of view, it looks like id was trying to bring the console experience of things "just working" to the pc. This is a bit different from other console ports that just hide the settings because they didn't add any extra stuff for the pc. Too bad this approach blew up in id's face

Yeah, back then it was. Now? Not so much. Sad but true. And it's not like this is news lol.

So for AMD 4000 series users, here is the fix that has finally worked for me. It's not perfect, but it's close.

CCC...Catalyst AI turned ON (numThreads 0 in launch options is required for this to work), OGL Triple Buffering OFF (you can try it it on, but game was crashing for me with it on).

Steam Set Launch Options... +r_swapInterval 1 +jobs_numThreads 0

With an engine like the one used here i'd be totally FOR more explaining, because i have no idea what a UBO is supposed to be. And i don't think many know what PPF's are either... which is actually a misnamed feature as well, as PPF could be summed up as "concurrent texture paging threads" and make much more sense that way. And unless i am stupid, that has nothing to do with CPU cores, paging is a IO operation on the HDD

Its actually kinda funny most of these issues exist because the engine is not OpenGL or D3D conform, had ID coded to the api specs the engine would run with nearly 0 issues across 99% of all hardware configs - thats what these specs exist for.

Anyone else find it kind of weird that they went on to explain graphics options that have been around for years to an audience that is largely going to know what all this means?

So it's the driver's fault that you never had a GUI for PC users for this? Riiiiiiight. Wow, has id ever turned into a bunch of dickholes.
