BF3 Caspian Border Testing; Open Beta Issues

Battlelog has word that more widespread testing of the Caspian Border map will be part of the Battlefield 3 beta this weekend as they stress-test the servers for 64-player games (thanks PC Gamer). Also, the Battlefield Blog outlines the top 10 issues DICE is encountering in open beta testing of their upcoming military shooter sequel. Here's the list, straight from the home office in Grand Rapids, Michigan:

  1. Squad issues: Cannot play with friends within same squad, squads get split up onto opposite teams, etc.
There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (If team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad and changing squads once in game.
  2. Regarding additional Open Beta content and fixes/patches for consoles, including PlayStation 3 issues with chat and party systems
While we would like to patch the Open Beta, DICE is currently focusing its available resources on polishing the retail game.
  3. Will DICE have enough time to iron out everything by release?
Please see General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson's blog post regarding this question.
  4. Can we have ability to change settings/options before deployment into match on PC?
The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.
  5. Issues with terrain stability and “falling into the map” on Operation Métro
This has been fixed for the beta via a server side update.
  6. Kill cam sometimes zooms out too far or outside the map
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.
  7. A bug that sometimes keeps some players from being able to sprint
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.
  8. Screen flickering/stuttering. Blue screen remains after respawn. Game locks up after deploying C4 (360)
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.
  9. Downed bodies appear to be dead, but are not
The DICE team has been looking into this issue – which is caused by a combination of incidents in a confined area - and are working hard to address the issue for the launch of the retail game.
  10. Why is the hit detection seemingly different from Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
The netcode is one of the many things that we are testing as part of the Open Beta and is not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates and has heard the feedback you’ve provided and is further optimizing online play.

You lose it all at the end of beta anyway

Was in a real cool Caspian round now but the lag is getting unbearable - i have a ping of 30 and lag like hell ;/

I don't see the fanboys holding up a valid preorder figure for the PC either so I find the imagery of some unseen mass of PC gamers holding preorders a bit confusing. I doubt EA cares anyway, they want big console sales and thats where most of the discontent was originating as they had a much rockier demo, oh excuse me beta, experience.

But they are meant to have customizable controls. A large percentage of people cannot even "test" because they can't use their own controls. How exactly are you supposed to "test" the planes and choppers in Caspian when you can't config the joystick?

The BF3 beta is one big giant fail. Guaranteed they have lost many many pre-orders over the state of it. I've decided I'm going to keep my pre-order, just to retain the right to bitch at launch when they fuck it up...and they will fuck it up.

I keep seeing people claiming there's been some massive loss of pre-orders, yet the only "proof" they have of such was a photo-shopped image of a twitter comment that several shoddy journalists took as legitimate without bothering to check.

Not that I doubt some whiny people left because of the state of a beta, but the dissenters have been constantly trying to make it sound like it's a big thing. It's not. The 34k number passed around was something some troll pulled out of his ass.

Only real glitch I've seen is related to pure server stability (which is the main point of the beta). I have a 50/50 shot of being disconnected before the round ends... Losing all my stats for that round.

Wish they saved periodically. Nothing sucks worse than fighting an awesome battle for an hour just to get DC'd near the end and not even get the "XP" you earned.

been in the map a bit today. It's a stress test so be warned that its pretty dang jumpy. Hopefully some optimizations will make it run a bit better otherwise it's pretty hard to play to give them any stress test data. I hadn't driven anything yet so running around in the various vehicles was fun. I hopped in a chopper expecting the controls to be like bc2 and they were backwards, I had to bail. Haven't made it in a jet yet but I can't imagine I'd be any good. Overall the beta has gotten me very excited about my preorder. I'm hopeful the hit detection won't be as big a deal a little farther out cause right now it pisses me off pretty good.

The sole purpose of this beta is to test the netcode and servers. That's it.
So if they want us to test netcode and the servers while aggravating us with old assed code that has a TON of other bugs? Yeah, that makes sense.

Honestly, no offense here.. But Beta tests aren't for you to "have fun" in.. No seriously.. They are to _test_ the game or the specific functions they want you to test. In this case it's the netcode and server stability.

If you're not willing to continue testing those portions or at least realizing that's the entire point then your choice is obvious. Stop playing.

To anyone that thinks a Beta is to rank up, relax, and enjoy the game. You're doing it wrong. Sure you _can_ have fun in some betas (this happens to be one I'm having fun with), but that's not the point, at all.

Not sure about all of them, but it will certainly make a lot of people change their mind about BF3. I did get to play that map while it was "locked" and it is definitely about 10X more fun than the Metro map was. I know this is a beta and not supposed to be fun, but that Caspian Border map made me excited about BF3 again. Even though I do not like Origin or I should say I much prefer Steam over Origin.

Will be interesting to see what people have to say about the caspian map. Hopefully there will be some kind words.

I got to play it for a few hours when it was under limited testing... and it was pretty amazing. The map itself was a decent size, I'd probably place it between one of the medium and large maps in BF2, slightly smaller than the largest maps in BFBC2. This at least made it large enough that vehicle travel was a big benefit, but you weren't SOL if you had to hump it across the map, and with 64 players there wasn't too many lulls in the battle. The vehicle balance needed a little tweaking, they actually seemed a little underpowered. One Engineer could take out a tank alone with ease. Helicopters were shot down almost immediately after take-off without any countermeasures. Hopefully they can beef them up a little bit (or speed up the vehicle unlocks) to bring back the need for teamwork to bring down vehicles.

But overall I think all the beta naysayers will change their tune when they get a chance to play Caspian... it is definitely a classic BF map.

Stopped reading right there. If you really think it is more important to ban cheaters in a free beta they could sign up again for (costing a grand total of zero), rather than study their methods before primetime, then its very, very unlikely you're really capable of any worthwhile commentary.

That statement just makes my head hurt. This was put out as a BETA, not a Demo. As such, you can and should expect bugs, glitches, and general wonkiness galore. I think companies should get in the habit of leaving several glaring bugs or incomplete portions of their game alone, during a beta test, just to help remind people of the actual purpose of the beta test. You put them up on a known and fixed list, and move along.

So wait...all you people in here that screamed bloody murder about having to use Origin are using it?

Hahaha at all of those people who hated Steam in 2004 too right buddy?! It's possible to remove software once its on your system, we have that power in the year 2011. Some people will even try things they might not like so they can educate themselves on it or maybe even change their mind. It was a freebie to try BF3, I installed Origin and promptly removed it after I played BF3 and saw that its mostly hype and that Origin is still a clunky piece of crap.

Played BF since BF1942, bit my tongue for a while now but I am very disappointed with the way this beta was done.

So many issues and bugs that it blows my mind that it was released to public for testing.

If DICE wanted to show the gaming community what BF is all about, they would've released Caspian Border as the main map. They're not going to win CoD fanboys with the unfinished version of Metro. You can polish a turd with pretty graphics but it's still a turd. What was DICE thinking?

-Cheaters and exploiters are running around freely and all they can say is that you're studying them. How bout some early bans to restore faith in BF community.

-Squading was done so well in BFBC2, now you can't even select a squad your clan mates are in. (I heard a fix is coming, I doubt it will come out at release)

-As DICE is aware, most hard core gamers use multiple key mouse controls but no support was included in beta. *facepalm*

-Browser based server selection and multiple drop down menus crap. You know how you accidentally go to a web site that spams your screen with crap and popups. Yea, you guessed it, that's what battlelog feels like. On top of that, you have to launch Origin, which launches a browser window, which then launches the game. Brilliant! *sarcasm*

-In game menu available only when player is alive, for the same reason you can't exit the game. I'd like to know who came up with that brilliant idea and give them the Darwin award.

Friendly flashlight and red laser blind. Want to piss off your team, simply attach a flash light and flash it on them as they try to engage the enemy. Jolly good time.

Bugs: Clipping problems/warping/hit detection/cross-hairs disappear/have to click DEPLOY multiple times to deploy/enemy names show up through smoke and cover/get stuck on small rocks/can't jump over small rocks, etc, etc.
Watch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx2hpuuVEd8

Also watch this video because that's pretty much why my clan mates are yelling curses on TS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGaP5wTYLtQ

I could go on but I feel better now after ranting for a bit.

hmm im not seeing the "bloody murder" part except for a few crazy posts here and there, most seem to say 'yep more DRM, it sucks, but whatever"

id have to agree that the origin service is wonky and clumsy, and id rather not have to use it.. but you do have to use it to play bf3 - soooooo...

but whatever floats your boat - btw, if you want some more people to laugh at, all you have to do is start paying attention to whats happening around you.. its endlessly entertaining, much deeper than you can imagine - you'll choke to death long before the show is over

Go forth, and kill!
