They don't have to high-res EVERY texture. The majority are fine as is. But they should really update all the shitty ass textures that were imported straight from Doom.
I wonder how their artists feel. They make a TB worth of (probably) awesome art, and then because it has to fit on two fucking dvds because Microsoft CHARGES YOU MORE for using extra DVDs, it gets compressed and reduced into oblivion.

And there are a lot of variables here, drivers, hardware etc. I've seen some complain it doesn't run on their onboard intel graphics card, so yeah... When these issues are news headlines, it's not obviously not affecting just a minority of users. John Carmack has openly admitted to the shortcomings of the engine. He did this before the game was even released.
The Car Combat? Well, fighting bandits reminds me 100% of playing Interstate '76 back in the late 90's, still to this day my favorite car combat game. And this as close as anyone has come, so i love the car combat as well, if only there was a Car Deathmatch mode instead of just combat racing. I'd probably spend an entire year dedicated to playing that just like I did I'76. From what I've seen and read, the vehicular combat in RAGE has more in common with Twisted Metal than I'76. I'76 was known for being a more realistic, sim-ish take on the genre. It had relatively realistic vehicle handling, locational damage, deep customization, etc. RAGE seems to be much more arcadey and simplistic. Granted it is a little more arcadey and simplistic than I'76 yes. But it's partially because you get to outfit your car with the weapons, armor, wheel attachments bumper attachments etc. That you want, and win, from the races in town. And it more reminds me of "76 than TM because of the setting, and that the machine guns can lock and follow a target instead of being dumbfired. As well as the high speed powersliding to turn and get a lock and chasing people around terrain etc. So yes, it is a little more arcadey than I'76, but nowhere near in the realm of arcadey as TM.
Twisted metal was more... Pick a character whose special weapon was overpowered and go to school on some people. Don't get me wrong, I liked Twisted Metal, but not in the same way I liked Interstate '76 and now RAGE. |

I couldn't find any FTTC ISPs without caps when I switched in August (35Mbps, from 3Mbps ADSL!). I ended up with a 12 month contract with 80GB cap for £30/m. I soon realised I badly underestimated my usage and am now on a 200GB cap for £50/m, d'oh!
The FTTC market is very young, only about 10% of ISPs offer packages yet (source: wild stab in the dark). Maybe more competition will improve this, certainly when my contract is up I will have more options. |

My hope in gaming journalism has been renewed. I'm glad that someone like Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica and Brian Sheffiled at Gamasutra are allowed to realistically evaluate and be be critical of a $60 high budget game from a major publisher and developer.
I think the conclusion is that id does game engines well, and they need to license this engine to other developers. The other developers will make actual story driven games with the technology that don't troll gamers as described in the Ars Technica interview. |

I did really enjoy enemy AI that presents an actual challenge though. They get shot, react realistically, duck/dive/hide behind objects and try to bait you into traps. That and the FPS play itself is quite fun, the wingblades are a really fun tool especially. It sounds like id tried to create this big, open, story driven game but had to scale some things back and/or couldn't pull it off. How much people like the game is likely to be based on how much they find the failed story and setting take away from the art and shooting gameplay. |

Other sites should look at this and see how it's done.
I haven't played the game yet (stupid UK release delay, although in this case the delay has probably stopped me from making a rash decision) but the part on meaningful choices stood out for me. "Rage has meaningful choices" - "really?" - "well, you choose ammo". Seriously, that's your meaningful choice? I want interviews to reveal that sort of thing. |

The graphics are impressive if you haven't played a video game since the 90s. Seriously, there are parking meters and other objects that are so blurry and smeared that it hurts my eyes to look at them. It's bad. Gonna have to give props to CryTek for addressing their poor texture problem and releasing the hi-res version fix. We'll see how id responds.* |

Ya know I really liked DOOM III. And it would have been almost perfect for ME accept for 3 things.
1: very tiny freedomless enviros
2: monsters always jumping out from the dark areas, got old very fast
3: the stupid flashlight b/s
Otherwise, that game scared the crap outta me with its atmosphere. Infact, it was the only game I had to force myself to finish. I literally dread to boot it up and play on. lol Not a perfect game by far, but it still delivered. I can`t think of any other similar game that even comes close.
As for Rage, I`d love to buy it. But I gotta have remappable key ability. Till they update the game to allow for remapping, I`ll sit this 1 out. |

Not sure why people were expecting the next big thing with this honestly. id really has not made a innovative game since quake 1. Even back in the day the single player of quake 2 was bad. The only thing that they changed besides graphics from quake 1 was the railgun.
I remember the beta for quake 3(id were early pioneers of just calling demos beta) was seen as good for the time when it first came out. However even then I questioned if it was worth the money with no single player and only deathmatch(carmack all but said ctf would be a post release patch). Then the unreal tournament demo came out, and I kind of have looked at id critically ever since.
Comparing UT to Q3 and I got the feeling id just didn't give a shit about making a fun, new experience and just wanted to release a glorified tech demo for their new engine. But at least I respected Q3 for being a good competitive game. When Doom 3 was announced I couldn't believe id would spend all their time doing something they are terrible at, singleplayer. I remember being called a troll a lot on these forums for implying doom 3 would either suck or nothing special. And now we have id releasing another singleplayer focused shooter.
Rage is actually a lot better then I thought it would be..but that's not saying much. It's ok but like doom 3 if you are looking for anything new look elsewhere, you played this game many many times before.
Boggles the mind id doesn't make a new competitive multiplayer shooter. Really has not been a new one in a long time(not counting the halo and mw tourneys that exist because they are popular, not because they are hardcore friendly). I mean jfc been what, 10 years since quake 3, and how many still go to quakecon? Like pissing money away. If street fighter 4, league of legends and starcraft 2 can be big hits don't see why there can't be a good hardcore fps. |

I used the P2P version. Had to download executables, dlls and what not. Used patch from russian forums to place files in correct places.
I built my PC myself, from different vendors and I'm pretty sure not all drivers are completely up to date. Except the nvidia drivers, that had to be updated for BF3.
Yet the game runs without a hitch. No popins, no lag etc.
I'm not saying Rage is not fault of anything, but if I could get this game to run with minimal effort, then so should anyone else.
I pre-ordered this game, and since it doesn't launch until the 7th in my region, I can't comment on the official release of the game, only the "community" relased version.
The game runs fine for me, and it's fun. Looks good too. Can't wait to get home and unlock the 8k by 8k textures (runs with 4kx4k by default it seems). |
