RAGE Tweaks

A thread on the Steam Users' Forums offers a RAGE tweak guide that explores what PC users can do to improve their experience with id's just-released first-person shooter by going under the hood and using console commands. These include commands for anisotropic filtering, turning off head bob and weapon sway, and to disable mouse smoothing. It seems any such changes must be entered manually every time the game is launched, however, as no one has yet discovered a way to make them stick. Thanks ^Drag0n^.

You're not impressed by Megatextures then?

Like I said, I'm playing it right now on a card that's not really made for gaming (Quadro FX4800), but the textures are truly just horrible. They're the most low-res pieces of crap I've seen in a game in over a decade. It looks 10000 times worse than all the screenshots we've seen so far.

If that's the flipside of Megatexture technology, then I hope they set it on fucking fire.

caveat: I still need to play it on my 5850, where it may look better. I sure as fuck hope so, because this game right now is just dirt fucking ugly. Borderlands looks better. I'm not joking.

Creston, I havent played it yet but from everyone I've talked says its one of the best looking games they've played this year. I do know that they did a similar trick that Epic does in Gears where inconsequential areas and items get some pretty low res textures while the main stuff gets all the gloss.

Have you tried different drivers?

I tried it on my game rig and the difference is night and day. There are still ridiculously low res textures in it (like literally 4x4 size textures) that are apparently imported straight from Doom, but overall it's MUCH sharper and better looking.

I've posted a much more detailed second look in the big Rage thread.

The graphics are mind blowing. However individual textures vary from detailed to Doom 1 quality (seriously!). I'm not sure if it's a bug, something tells me it was something they did to make the game playable on consoles.

If it is a bug, I hope it gets patched soon. If not perhaps Id will release a texture patch to bring the games textures up to what a PC can do. If not, I'm sure we'll see a 'high end textures mod' before too long.

That can't be, surely? The screen shots were PC I think. It must be your card. I haven't played it yet. This is the least excited I've ever been for an Id Software game.

Wait, you're still getting shit textures on your 5850? Or is this the rig @work?

***EDIT

N/M...just saw your follow-up.

Quadros, IME, have usually had shit gaming performance to begin with. More for CAD, etc.

No, he means 20. The default FOV in the game is 80. The cvaradd command ADDS the specified value TO 80. So if he did cvaradd +120 then the FOV would go to 200...

Creston

Well that certainly makes more sense

I've added (+cvaradd g_fov 20) to the SET LAUNCH OPTIONS after right clicking Rage on MY GAMES list then clicking Properties. Game runs amazing and looks fantastic.

Anyway, not much to complain about love the game so far... enjoying head shooting mutant scum and bandits. But was wondering if anyone has played around with the FOV. Since I'm not having much of any slow down and no pop in at all I want to change my FOV to the max I can use without causing graphic slow downs. So if anyone has experimented please let us know. Thanks...

Holy crap, that must be like playing through a keyhole...

Yeah, is that a typo? Or does that mean something like 20 degrees more than the default?

Where's the rage (punny?) over this? People went ape shit because you had to edit a config file to tweak certain things in Dead Island, but it seems id is getting it easy.

Pesky kids...Uncle Johnny has to hold their hand through the scary autoexec.cfg, eh? When I grew up, I had to walk to school in the snow. Uphill. BOTH WAYS. And we edited our autoexec.cfgs....and we LIKED it!

Bah, back when I was a nipper, we had to edit our autoexec.bat files, and we DAMN WELL LIKED IT.

You can just add them to the launch options in Steam as well. There is base.cfg in the games directory too but I haven't tested it yet.

Modifying or adding any CFG files will not work. They have locked it down. I know of many who have tried and no one has gotten it to work.

Steam launch is the only way or dropping down the console in game and manually typing in commands.
