RAGE Reviews - PC Users Raging - ATI RAGE Drivers

Today is the North American release date for RAGE, and the game is now unlocked in some territories on Steam. Reviews are also popping up. You can read about id's new first-person shooter on AtomicGamer, AZ Central, Computer and Video Games, Destructoid, Edge Magazine, Eurogamer, gamesTM, GameTrailers, guardian.co.uk, IGN, IncGamers, Joystiq, PC Gamer, and Strategy Informer. There also seems to be quite an uproar among some PC gamers, there's a lengthy thread on reddit saying "The PC Steam version of RAGE is riddled with graphical problems and bugs!" pointing to complaint threads on the Steam forums here and here as well as on the Bethesda forums. Another large reddit thread is titled "RAGE - We need to fix this problem," and another on the topic of the game seeming like a console port, pointing to this Steam Users' Forums thread saying the game requirements have changed: "Minimum: XBOX360 or PS3 - Recommended: XBOX360 or PS3." Finally, AnandTech points the way to a new AMD Catalyst - Rage Performance Driver.

IMO, whe haven't had a PC-centric developer since UT2004 and Crysis came out...everyone is making their mainstay off the consoles now (well, there is Bohemia, but that is somewhat niche)...

Point blank shotgun is still a symphony of awesome on soft targets. The wingsticks are an insta-gib too.

I finally got into the city map last night; the textures definitely aren't up to snuff in that area It may be time for me to upgrade the old 8800s unless some tweak comes out that addresses it. Damn, those cards have lasted me almost forever...5 years now, I think.

It's fucking ridiculous to have to upgrade your GPU for a game like this. The engine is a pile of bad coding. Last week I was still bragging about how my 2 year old gig can still run all the newest games on max settings only for this console port to prove me otherwise? I'm not falling for that, and I feel horribly freaking sad for the people that do. Horribly.

The worst part is that we're talking about id here.
It always seemed to me that they had some of the most competent coders what's with all the new tech they were always pushing.

I guess we're seeing the fall of id here.

I doubt that highly. Every one of their games have had issues, and every game on release someone said that. Hasn't happened yet, and I doubt it will now.

I agree that the PC version of the engine isn't fully baked, but, as I've said numerous times, Carmack is not one to let a project go that still has issues--many here have seen that firsthand. He'll see it through.

And I'm pretty sure that will benefit whatever else they make under idTech5.

Maybe but let me clarify. I didn't mean the the whole company is going to fall.
It's just that PC gamers lost another real PC developer.
Now we donce.

However, ignore RAGE.

That's an old quote that gamepur actually seems to think is new. He said that like six months ago.

And even so, it's horseshit. Seriously, John? You couldn't figure out six years ago that the PCs would get more powerful and the consoles would stay the same? And that this would hinder the development of your shiny shitty new engine? Rolleyes

It sounds more like pandering to me.

It's not one game. Hell, that WOULD be stupid. It's the lack of DX11 support, lack of onboard Cuda/Physx (OK, not so much the Physx)the fact that two new 580s would burn less power than just one of my 8800GTXs, and the fact that those two cards are like running a space heater on my office, which kinda sucks in the summer.

I just hate spending the money, because these cards have been an amazing value, considering their service life...

This is with all the correct drivers and modified config files for improved quality: Fence; Switch.

The game is 21GB for all the wonderous MegaTexture goodness and yet some of the textures look like that when maxed out. Shocking. And it doesn't support Crossfire, SLI or hardware tessellation.

Yeah, I wanted to tie Loosum to my buggy and take her for a ride, but the game won't let me.

Good, because I've run into some weird artifacting shit in Wellsprings, and it's making it night unplayable.

This has been an absolutely pisspoor release.

Bethesda is working on an update to allow for users to customize their video options which will solve many of the issues users are having.

The 8800GTX was a pretty incredible card. People scoffed at the price but most of those people probably upgraded to the tune of that and then some in the same time period.

Yeah, the shooting is absolutely solid. Enemies take too many bullets for my liking (come on, a shot to the face should kill someone, end of story) but that's about my only gripe. The AI's decent, enemies are varied, they use cover, they use grenades, they try to flank. It's good stuff.
