Technical Director of id Software John Carmack tweets about his plans to engage in midnight madness here for next week's release of RAGE, id's new first-person shooter, also admitting he expects "to be signing a lot of things.":

I'm going to be at the Mesquite, TX GameStop Monday night for the midnight Rage release if anyone wants to say hi.

Edit : While I sorta agree with the whole "At Gamestop? WTF?" commentary, I'm kind of curious what "PC store" John is supposed to show up at? Walmart or Best Buy wouldn't give him the time of day. If Carmack made it to London to sign stuff at midnight I'd be well impressed, but you know, he only lives down the road in Texas and he's got stuff to do tomorrow. Like make a patch for post release Rage. This can't we worse than Quake 4, but I have no expectations at all. It's going to be fun! You know that thing?

The real reason its called RAGE, cause people can't talk about the game without flying into a rage Yeah gamestop bites, but its probably some promotional deal involving Microsoft. As a PC gamer it sucks one of the PC gaming icons would be doing a signing at a store that sells ~~only~~ mainly console titles, but then that's pretty much any now. Bestbuy's PC game section is mighty small anymore. The only place I'd know of that'd have a large PC game section would be Fry's.

I think it's great that someone like Carmack is willing to go out and talk to gamers. This is his biggest project to date and a huge engine update, to which he deserves recognition. I wouldn't say that he's 'whoring himself out' either, as most of the interviews and demonstrations have been handled by other staff.
