John Carmack at Mesquite Midnight RAGE Release

Technical Director of id Software John Carmack tweets about his plans to engage in midnight madness here for next week's release of RAGE, id's new first-person shooter, also admitting he expects "to be signing a lot of things.":
I'm going to be at the Mesquite, TX GameStop Monday night for the midnight Rage release if anyone wants to say hi.

I like the PC. I prefer the PC. I don't care if John Carmack "sells out" or whatever. If a game he is involved with is good on the PC, then he wins and I win too. That's all I care about. Where are the reviews? I hope RAGE is good on the PC.

RAGE is a big test for id. They haven't released a game in a long time and this will be their first story driven game. Or at least I hope it's a story driven game.

I don't see what the success of the game has to do with the PC version being better or not. One is a measure of sales, the other is a measure of technical quality. Like many here I bought the PC version of Rage because I expect it to be the "best" regardless of how well the console version sells. There is really nothing wrong with that attitude either. If you want to buy the console version then no one is stopping you, how does someone buying the PC version affect your ability to choose?

Get a life, moron.

Some of us (me) actually have both a gaming PC and a console, and have no problem with a game being (gasp!) released on both.

It's the content that matters, not the platform. Duh.

Not trying to defend Cutter here or anything but...seriously? 'It's the content that matters, not the platform?'

I mean...you think it doesn't matter when the quality of content is directly influenced by the obvious limitations of an old platform?

I don't have a beef with you owning both platforms...but you'd have to be living in some alternate dimension to believe that what we get from multiplatform games isn't diminished for the PC by the fact that the lead SKU for development is a console.

Uh, you actually want to blame the consoles for that?

Really?

As if a development team is incapable of delivering quality content on both?

So that's the consoles fault??

Really????

Its ok, later on in the year he will be off to go buy the new batman game and spend ages telling everyone how the pc version is a better game because of a texture pack.

despite the gameplay won't change, despite the fact consoles drove the success of the game.

Everyone on Bluesnews is synical, get over it.

I think we may have different definitions of humble. John isn't one to seek center stage, feign superiority, or look down on anyone.

you should dig up some of his old .plan updates. he likes to throw in his ferraris and how he modded them to the point that they are not street legal. plus how many he owns at any given time. its quite the opposite of what you perceive.

your memory needs refreshment. he did not get rid of all his ferraris. and he also did not do it for his family. he sold some of them to fund his space venture.

That's odd, not that he and I close by any sense of the word, but in our last exchange around GDC, when I asked about his F50, he told me he got rid of the Ferraris in lieu of an X5 for his wife, and a Tesla for himself.

I'm well aware of his .plan updates, but you're still kinda missing the point here. Him talking about his hobby (the cars, and by that, I assume you're speaking of the 1100HP Testarossa), never struck me as bragging, but rather as the musings of a guy that admitted his two hobbies were cars and coding at the time. He would have posted the same if he was tricking out a '74 Impala. I've never heard the man brag, belittle, or feign superiority over anyone. Quite the opposite. He's usually welcoming, the first to offer insight or help, and has one of the most in-check egos I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Doom 4 and Rage 2 are on the board first, and any revisit to Quake1/QW would compete directly with their browser version of Q3. So I doubt it's high on their "must do!" list...

Poor widdle Cutter can't stand the fact that some folks may actually enjoy playing games on consoles, and that they could actually be sold on both consoles AND PC's!

Too bad.

I hope that is indeed the case, as the weapons and navigation dynamics (zip lines) look appealing for DM.

But, unless JohnC has taken on pathological deception in the last few years as a new personality trait (which I doubt), I'm given little reason but to believe him at his word that the game wasn't designed for DM.

*sigh*

I wonder if there's really that much demand for stand-alone DM anymore, seeing as how everyone and their mom are now playing things like CoD and BF, with unlocks and persistent character growth etc.

Good point. I mean Epic has even come out stating that another UnReal Tournament isn't on their drawing board in the foreseeable future.

I thingk the only recent run and guns are Serious Sam (which I just can't explain why it has no appeal to me), and Shattered horizon, which was less a game and more of a benchmarking tool that you could play as a game.

The only hope I see on the horizon are the ruminations that id wants to revisit the Quake IP in the vein of Quake1/QW.

Nothing could make me happier.

I think it looks pretty sweet. But I can't really tell you one way or the other until Tuesday.

I'm in agreement. I think my only concern is the lack of DM, but, to be honest, I've found myself playing more co-op games than adversarial ones as of late. Probably due somewhat to my drop in snapfiring skills with age, but mores to do with the people I play with.

I'm of the opinion that if the game does well enough, iD may include DM/TDM as a DLC option. They probably just wanted to get the game proper launched at a reasonable date so they cut FPS MP.

Wouldn't you? If I had a Ferrari, fuck yeah I'd be talking about it.
